Brand new to Warhammer 40K, and table top gaming. I have bought, assebled and painted a Chaos Space Marine army over the last couple months. I have only fought 4 battles with my army: a massacre victory followed by a minor victory, a desicive defeat and another minor victory. While I credit beginner's luck to my modest sucess so far I have also got alot of help from my opponent (friend). I only know one person who plays so all of my battles so far, and in the near future have come against Imperial Guard. I have the battle set plus a couple units I bought seperatly. 15 csm + Rhino, 8 Berserkers, 5 possessed, 5 Terminators, 10 Lesser Deamons, Chaos Lord with Terminator armour (Lightning Claws), Deamon Prince, Vindicator, and a Sorcerer I made from spare bitz. The Guard player I face has been very helpful but as I have won a couple games now I think he is really going to start to throw all he's got at me. I would expect nothing less! Any tips on how to mix it up and be ready for whatever he throws my way? We play mostly 1000pts but could play up to 1250 or even more. He plays with 2 LR battle tanks and Lots of Lascannons and Autocannons. Thanks in advance for any help.
I honestly have been playing CSM for almost 2 years now and I've won maybe one game with them. You are beating me so any advice I can offer would be ridiculously useless.
You're on a good roll and it may continue if you go about playing the way you are the only thing I can say is defilers rock.
One interesting thing I tend to do against Guard is to have my 'zerkers jump out of their Rhino and run behind it. That way the Rhino isn't considered a priority target and your 'zerkers can get relatively close... that's where any IG players I have versed stain their pants and panic. Always an interesting sight. Suddenly all your other models get a turn without being shot! Hehe.
Basically, demorilising your enemy is always a good tactic.
"I'm the Devil, I LOVE Metal!"
"Well I'm a Wargamer and I prefer plastic models..."
Running the defiler with the rhino together using the rhino to screen out with a 4+ cover will give you khorne a super-hard-hitter in close combat when they reach it.
Thanks for the tips guys! I have a bit more specific question now... I can't seem to find the best role for my vindicator. I tried to use it in a "tank hunter role" but was outclassed and out ranged by his LR. (x2) Since his troops are relatively weak I think sending the vindicator after them would be overkill. For these reasons I have been leaving it out of my army list and wish I didnt have to. Is this a case of my inexperiance not knowing how to use it or is it really used better in another role or against another army? Thanks.
Vindicators are a good unit that can do many things against many armies. Generally the vindi is used in pairs with daemonic posession and a lash DP or two. The vindi is used in this to deal with large concentrations of troops caused by lash. I use them against guard as and anti-heavy weapons unit. If a Heavy weapons squad or something else need to die I will drop a vindi on them and if by some chance they live the will have to test to hold the line. Vindicators can cause check on 1 or 2 units per turm and with guard Ld eventually they will fail or they will die.
hope it helps
You are much better off, in my opinion, taking out 5-6 weaker guys(say for example orks, 5 orks is 30 points) than spending a very useful piece of artillery on trying to take out tanks when it has to creep up the board and only has that one shot.
I tend to not even try hitting hard targets unless I have 2-3 things able to break through it on a good chance because my dice fail to penetrate tanks almost all the time.
Dont forget that they also have the best regular troops choice as well. Coming standard with frag and krak grenades as well as a bolter bolt pistol and a chainsword.
Maybe omgitsduane has only played one game
Anyway, what I did in my list is spam anti infantry units. I took 3 defilers, 2 plasma noughts, 2 lash princes and I geared up all of my troops to anti infantry too. All in 3000pts. I can honestly say I believe all his troops choices will be gone by the end of turn 3, which realy screws your opponent up in any game (especialy objectives). Also, why he has that to worry about, I've got a termi squad geared up to knock out his HQ!
It must be said though, dont go OTT. You still need some anti tank. I've got a LR to knock out the heavy stuff and all of my defilers have got auto cannons to weasel troops out if their transport. I'm yet to test my list but I recon personaly it will be pwnage because it took half a year of forum posting to formulate it
Heres a link to my list, if your feeling nosy. (3000pt Iron Warriors)
