I have enough wings from boxes of possessed to make up to 10 raptors. Currently I've made a champion with a pair of lightning claws (may also give him meltabombs in case the squad gets charged by a dreadnought), a raptor with a meltagun & icon of Khorn, a raptor with just a melta gun and three more with bolt pistols & chainsaws. All to be painted in Black Legion colours. The idea is to use them as HQ/character hunters but still keep them flexible enough for general tactical support. So do I expand the squad up to 10 or just 8 and use the last two wings for something else (perhaps two raptors with flamers that I can swap in for the meltas for hoard-type armies, though I've currently just got one flamer left over from my CSM box)? I also have a sorceror that I'm converting to ride a screamer (disc of Tzeentch) because it looks cool (will probably have warp time & wind of chaos) that will probably end up fighting with them. Or is it worth keeping one set of wings for a lash sorceror and expanding the squad to 9 raptors? So many choices. Any suggestions on the optimal raptor count and configuration?
6-8 strong with 2 meltas. IoK or IoS work well for them and the champion should take PF or 2 L-Claws and a MB if you fancy. 2 flamers is possible but it does make the unit mainly anti infantry. It depends on what else yopu have in your army but 2 meltas I think is better.

If I take them (rarely), I'll use 2 7-8man squads.
They get a TON of incoming fire because they're so mobile, so you'll have to use them stratigicaly.
Against guard/orks/nids, I'll usualy do a flamer unit and a melta unit. Against MEQs I go with the meltas.
Every mark works well on them, all depending how you have them geared up.
Don't overlook the MoN, because they'll enevitably get charged, and that 4(5) is nice to have to save yourself from having to take a bunch of saves.

Necrons : W-8 D-3 L-7 (Sleeping in their TombFoam, waiting for a new codex)
Chaos Forces (CSM/CD): W-42 D-19 L-28
Apocalypse Games : W-4 D-0 L-1 (4 Titans, Brass Scorp, 3 Baneblades, 2 Bombers, 3 Fighters, and a Partrage in a Pear Tree)
10 raptors with a lightning clawed champion and 2 flamers + a sorcerer of tzeentch on disk with wind of chaos and warptime is my favourite setup.
Who cares its almost 500pts? I love it
When I field raptors I use a squad of 12 with dual meltas and a PF. Sometimes ill take IoCG and sometimes Iok. I know this seems like overkill, but as has been previously stated, raptors take a LOT of shots on their way across the battle field.

I personally use a small squad (5 raptors + champ) but I put them with my chaos lord with wings. Give them a MoK and 2 meltas and they are really deadly as a kill-all unit. Pretty much anything that causes me problems can be dealt with fairly quickly by them. Note I don't usually play games above 1000pts or so which means my squad sizes are a bit smaller than others might use. I plan on getting another 5 or so to be able to customize for assault if my enemy is more vulnerable to that instead of massed bolter fire (playing a mostly nurgle army).
