Hello everyone, if you have not noticed i have posted a death guard codex help question in this forum and now that i picked the chaos codex for my book i need a little help. I will play pre heresy death guard which means i stay away from anything chaosy; so i was wondering if was to take say an icon of nurgle to make my marines more death guard fluffy for the toughness, would it be alright to do that because in reality it wouldn't be a chaos icon, it would be like a little banner the sargeant carries or something.
To put the question briefly, is it okay to use a mark of chaos as a non chaotic fluff style way of getting a bonus? My icon bearer will still look like a banner carrier or something but even if it is technically the mark of nurgle, to keep the fluff of my pre heresy, can it not look like chaotic nurgly soldiers/banner? Would you allow me to use the bonus, even if my army didn't look nurgly? I need some serious help, because although im quite willing to just take a standard no icon army, it would be nice to have the icon to help me make my death guard more death guard-y. I WILL NOT BE USING A LIST IN ANY GW EVENTS, I RARELY PLAY AT LOCAL STORE TOURNIES.
Pre-Heresy Death Guard
"For Mortarion, For Barbarus, For the Emperor!"
Well are the death guard typically tougher than other marines, I only thought it was the blessings of Nurgle that made them more tough, beforehand they would have been normal marines?
Thats the fluff view, for the gaming view i'd let you do it, wouldnt bother me.
A Mark of Nurgle doesnt always have to mean the squad looks vile and rotten same as a Mark of Khorne doesnt always need to mean the squad is covered in blood and gore. (though it helps).
Finding a creative way of making it clear the they have the MoN would be my best suggestion. You can always tell your opponent before game who has what Mark but that will soon be forgotten mid-game more than likely.
Currently play: 4000+ of Black Legion
Actually, according to the Chaos Codex fluff, the reason they are tougher and have Feel no Pain is because they are full of painful disease and have gotten used to taking punishment and shrugging it off (check the fluff text on the page that describes the Plague Marines). Due to this, i would see the IoN as a chaos only thing and therefor would not allow it to be used in a pre-heresy Death Guard army.
I would happily let you play with ION, you could just play it off as they are fearless, unyielding warriors who shrug off wounds with 'willpower' or something. My squads don't have banners, but a trophy rack or something and no one has ever called me up on it for not using proper icons. Small, unique details that separate the model from the rest would work.
Signature? What, do I sign my name here or something?
Well after reading the Horus Heresy novels it seems that the Death Guard were always really tough and able to soak up a lot of punishment. I'd say the Mark of Nurgle bonus being represented by a banner or something equivalent is fair.
I'd say go for the Icon but not just as a sergeant banner, try to make it like each unit has a personal banner that one of the marines carrie round, kinda like a standard bearer but for each squad, then your opponent knows what it is too.
What else did you have in mind for the army? Would love to see what you do with the termis (if you have any). Great inspiration is the Horus Heresy art book, so much awesome artwork, could do an army themed off each page almost
Well, seems like the question has been answered clearly. I'm now posting, since I think everyone will agree, I bring (That little extra something) to threads, and didn't want the people in this thread to feel left out
Happy hunting all
Though I'd make the distinction that a Pre-heresy death guard would NOT be of Plague marine capability. The Mark of Nurgle bonus is just fine however.
PM me about Aurora Prime Vassal fights! Willing and ready!
remember. an Icon doesn't have to be a banner. it could be molded onto the backpack of somone. there are ways around it. Just paint them greenish give them all 3 circles for their squad mark (representing the 3 flies of nurgle) and that be good.
