I was just flipping thorugh my old codex for nastalgia and came across a piece of paper with my old Iron Warriors army written on it and it got me thinking, are the Iron Warriors still a viable list? I know they lost a bunch of upgrades, but can a serious Iron Warriors list still be written up for at least a semi-competetive tourny?
Well, without Vet skills, Iron warriors would pretty much be... normal CSMs now. No deamons, but since everyone can have Vindicators and Oblits are no longer 0-1... there's nothing to differentiate them now.
What do you mean without vet skills? Didn't they get like.. "Siege Specialist" or something else that never got used?
It's certainly still a viable list, though I suspect it would just be an obliterator/vehicle heavy vanilla CSM list. Nothing wrong with that. Not every list needs a lash prince to be competitive.
lol That's pretty much what I said actually. The only thing that made Iron Warriors special back in the day was Vet skills (Siege Masters), having Vindis, and the ability to have as many Oblits as you could fit in your army. I guess they did havethe option of 4 Heavy Support slots back then, now that I think about it. But regardless, Iron Warriors in this edition would be... Standard CSMs.
I'm more thinking if it was a HUGE loss for them not to be able to use 9 oblits and land raiders/vindis/preds.
So....basically IW are not unique now because they lost all the overpowered stuff?
IW are as viable as ever, you just need to put more focus on troops (which is awesome for such powerfull troops as the basic CSM) and now that termiantors are really cheap you can finally get a decent heavily armoured IW infantry force.

hmm, didn't even think of termies, I was so wrapped up on the loss of Oblits as Elites that I didn't stop to think of Termies or even Dreadnaughts.
IW are totally a viable and competative list still. They are, as everyone is saying, just a standard CSM army, with no marks/icons except maybe IoCG. The biggest thing missing is the fourth heavy slot, and use of the basalisk. You can now take 9 oblits(and not get called cheesy IW).
Another thing missing would be the same thing all marine lists are now missing and that's 5 man las/plas squads. But in 5th ed those are totally obsolete now that you need stronger more resiliant troops. For the old IW guys who took the 9 oblits, they still can and it would be a nasty list, just toss in 3-4 units of 10 CSM toting 2 specials and powerfists and blamo good strong, hard hitting list. If you don't have 9 oblits, then take some other heavies like vindis or defilers. Personally, considering the fluff of IW to siege a location so hard that nothing could resist them, I think 2-3 defilers fits the army great. Toss in a unit of termis, lots of CMS troops and away you go.
Age is a state of mind, and since I have no mind, I don't age.
