Hello peeps, me and 2 of my friends have a match this sunday. Its a little short notice for this message but any help will be appreciated.
Basically me (Thousand Sons) and 2 friends (Eldar: Scorpion and Swooping hawk heavy) and necrons (Monolith and heavy destroyer heavy) are going against this guy from works massiv eldar army and Tau force.
I have no idea what to expect from them in terms of forces not helpfull i know >.< but any general tips for me specifically. I know TS are shooty and should try and prioritise units with 3+armour saves (i do know this guy loves warp spiders so it could be fun )
Between us though we have no idea about Tau rules or tactics other than they stand far away and shoot. Will my TS be outgunned? Since the necrons are heading for the eldar specifically and im left with dealing with the Tau. The eldar guy can provide CC support, and if all goes well hopefually the varity of our forces will be too much for 2 armies to deal with.
ANything any Tau players really hate and what should i look out for that could crush inexperienced n00bs like us.
Thanx in advance ill post results and general gameplay when were done.
Normal Tau Firewarriors (the Taus main troop choice) have str5 guns as standard and thus are wounding your guys on 3's... What i do is run an all mech Plague Marine army against him, but since you can't i would maybe think about running some rhinos... however.
There heavy support all incorporate Rail Guns Which are Strength 10 AP1 so any vehicles on your side are going to die unless you get turn 1.. so to counter act this use all terrain available to hide tanks from view during turn 1, just in case you don't get it...
My homage to my time spent at Libararium Online:
Tau aren't a hard fight for Chaos. They shoot a lot but have surprisingly little that ignores a power armor save, and between their CC weakness and low leadership they're intolerant of attrition. If you can set up a footslogging crossfire with your 1k Sons then they'll die swiftly.
The best-case scenario is that your opponent uses the Tau as a static firebase to support an Eldar advance. If he does that then focus on breaking the Eldar hammer and leave the Tau anvil for later, since he'll be outnumbered and compensating for your own lack of speed that way. If you can arrange to block Tau LOS with vehicles then so much the better. The worst-case scenario is the opposite: Eldar defending the Tau. You can try overloading a flank by putting all your men plus the Necrons on one side while your Eldar ally puts just enough pressure on the other side to prevent your opponent from reinforcing, or use a similar tactic and use Chaos/Necrons to support an Eldar charge. The former would take a lot of cooperation and the latter would be a gauranteed blood bath.
With so many low-toughness enemies, Gift of Chaos might be a great way to bolster your numbers. Best of luck!

To me, i would run a total skimmer horde. Which really you'd be in for some serious damage. In that instance you are going to need to be mobile, rhinos for you, a few monoliths and grav tanks on your eldar friend.
He will probably load on Crisis Suits backed with Fire warriors in devilfish, hammerheads or broadsides, and coupled with aspects in Falcons and fire prisms.
In that instance you are really going to want to be aggressive, i'd be using hard hitting CC to lock up vehicles and hopefully pop them or at least tie up his units.
To combat it, i would most likely use probably 3 squads of 5 terminators and some deep striking eldar aspects to punch holes in tanks, and then just hit his front lines with troops choices. Working in a pincer movement basically, Its tough and relies on the terminators coming in, but a 4 + roll on turn 2 is all you need.
All in all, i say he will be overly mobile, and you will be outgunned purely based on his mobility, if you don't address it.
Hey guys thanx for the swift replies.
I think our opponents are setting up in a way Intrepid described which could mean good things for us. Im thinking with going with the idea of having Necrons and TS overloading a flank with the Eldar and the Monolith providing support. Ive been talking to the necron guy and we might try putting the monolith blocking as much LoS from the Tau to us a possibble while keeping it in range for warriors to teleport incase of needed reinforcments for the eldar or even if they have taken a lot of casulties with an extra WWBB roll a weakened squad could potentially come back at full strength and assult from a side.
I have only 1 squad of Terminators with IoT (keeping kinda fluffy with the TS army theme) which i can either deepstrike and hope they can deepstrike early if weve misjudged something support any weaknesses, or foot slog them with the main army providing combi plasma and Reaper cannon shots.
Any other suggestions are ofcourse welcome i have some time tomorrow to try and finish my terminator squad leader, and possibly finish the sourcerer for the TS squad. (Its put together just think itll look awesome with the fully painted squad.
Get your Eldar ally into Melee as soon as possible. Hawks and Scorpions will tear up anything in the Tau army. Heck, even Necron Warriors can run through Tau in Melee. Perhaps Deep Strike a Monolith right into the heart of the Tau lines and start teleporting stuff in.
Do you know the opponents play style? If he's a static player, he'll have his Tau back shooting and have the Eldar troops deployed in front to counter any Melee troops coming up.
General strategy. Shoot the Eldar to pieces and get into Melee with the Tau ASAP.

The game was played on the weekend and it was kind off undecided at the end who would have won since our Eldar guy had to leave. We made our army lists at this guys house 1000 each for my team and our 2 opponents had 1500 each.
The Eldar opponent was facing me so i was pitted against him, he had a balanced force with Harlequins, Eldrad, the special Striking scorpion character and 2 wraithlords. I had only anti troop troop choices. 2 TS squads 1 Emp children squad (what comes in the box ie very few sonic weapons) 5 raptors and a sourcerer with IoS with lash and wings. My friends were on the Tau players case and i was defending from the Eldar attack (with allied fire dragons ready to counter the wraiths.
Being quite new to the rules i had to take our opponents word for things. I gotta say i really enjoyed the eldar killing at the start, I lost relativly few units (about 3 Thousand sons and 4 Emporers children to the assult from the Scorpion guy who in turn died) but i lost both my Aspiring sourcerers thanx to the runes of wardingon eldrad. I lost stuff the enemy fire, wraithlords were detured by the fire dragons and it seemed a decent little skirmish.
Our problems came with the Tau, who held lots of his army in reserve and began with opnly 12 fire warriors shadow sun and drones. In reserve he had 2 railgun tanks a sky ray and 3 crises battle suits with drones (in 2 squads). He moved his crises suits in and out of cover with no dangerous terrain tests which i thought he would have to do but we took his word for it. My allies monolith was destroyed by shadowsun.
Basically our eldar guy had to go so we conceded, he lost a lot of stuff to enemy fire and the necrons had most of their troop choices intact (thanx to the lords res orb and a tomb spider which we choose as the unit of the match it did wonders for us). I had lotsa slow TS left and a weakened EC squad my lord and 3 raptors, the eldar enemy was decimated but the Tau was still in force and if the game carried on i dont think we would have anything that could do anything against it.
Has anyone came up a similar setup and how do you deal with it, i know my army composition isnt great im planning to get a defiler cos the model is cool and a pred. It just seemed like we could do very little against the Tau's huge army. Sorry for the long post. I also hate runes of warding Ill make any anti psyker my main priority from now on. Many thanx people we will beat them next time!!
With the benefit of hind-sight, you could have used a vindicator because the railguns were in reserve. That might not have done you good against the eldar, but it would have really shaken the firewarriors.

How was the monolith killed by shadowsun? Arn't her melta's still only str 8 and don't monoliths take away the extra pen dice from meltas?
As for pyshcers the only thing I know of is to kill it.. /shrug
