I field a Word Bearers army, and I try to maintain a completely Chaos Undivided army. So, no cult troops in my army. But, I keep trying out different squads to be my "Cherrypicker" squad. The marines that sit back on my objective and hold it for me. I've been fielding a 10 man squad with an Icon of Chaos Glory, a Plasma gun, and either a Missile launcher or Lascannon. I'm just wondering what kind of builds you would recommend for that kind of job.
Discount sushi isn't just a bargain, it's an adventure
I much more prefer 2 special weapons but if you want a heavy then I suggest a heavy bolter, not to expensieve and it will compliment the sqauds bolters and plasmagun.
I think lesser daemons are much better to use for this role. They're cheaper and providing your objective is in cover they are fairly difficult to remove.
I'd say stick with a mobile dual-special weapon (I tend to use meltaguns, personally) 10 man squad to take the forward objectives and if you really need the heavy weapon support, one or two of those squads with something like an autocannon or lascannon hanging back on your home objectives.
It's really, really difficult to get a 10 man squad of Marines off of an objective if they're in cover.
Here's what I've found.
Lascannon - really nice to have an extra one of these firing off each turn, especially since my Heavy Support usually doesn't have them (since 5th edition made them less useful) however, if an opponent throws something at you on the last turn or two, you're going to need the ability to move and fire, and probably assault so you can attempt to force them away from the objective that is being guarded. For this purpose, I'd suggest Meltaguns or Plasmaguns. But really it's all up to you - if you're confident in your end game then the Lascannon will do fine, but if you're looking for a squad that can handle surprises I'd say Double Meltagun or maybe Plasmagun. And I also strongly recommend a Powerfist and Icon.
WIth Lesser Deamons, you gain flexibility for obj.capturing. So you don't have to use your expensive 255pt marine squad to hold the back obj, but instead can have them where they'lll do a difference. just my two cent.
- But on the heavy weapon choice,
You can't really have anything more useful then a couple of plasma or melta to hold an objective. The heavy weapons are too situational for this purpose, to really pick a universal one imo.

And now to erase your memory of this entire conversation.
i'd only choose lesser daemons when i'd have something with an icon already parked on that objective (like havocs). otherwise, i could end up having to summon them where my attackers are in 3rd or 4th turn and they might not make it back there, then.
i suggest a 10 man squad of chaos marines with 2 plasma guns and icon of chaos glory. they should deal well with any outflankers and deepstrikers that aren't to numerous. in my games the backward objectives are often attacked by deepstriking terminators, scouts, genestealers, land speeders and/or bikes and the like. plasma guns provide sufficient punch to kill those, there is no melta needed.
if you want your objective holding squad to do something else, too, give them a rhino so they can support your advance and then fall back to claim the objective. plasma guns see to it that they can occasionally shoot something with their special weapons if nothing is attacking their objective.
