Hello there, I have 3 quick questions for my Chaos Demon brethren...
1) What is you opinion of Skarbrand The Exiled One's?
2) Have you ever fielded Skarbrand, and if so, how did he preform?
3) Was there ever any FAQ or errata about Karanak and his "elite choice" rules?
That last one may seem a little odd but when I was flipping through my codex I saw the rules under Karanak's entry. I thought it was a mistake so I did a search here and found that other people here thought that too. But if the rule was never corrected I'd like to think of it as a way to get another unit of Flesh Hounds on the field
(On a side note, am I the only one that finds it funny that GW thought that both these units needed Instruments of Chaos?)
Skarbrand is a good choice if you take a high initiative army. Daemoneette, demonic hounds, fiends, seekers and charging bloodletters and crushers will do well as will daemonprinces and other greater daemons.
Because both sides get to reroll hits in combat the question of who gets initiative is very important. Charging enemies with higher initiative will result in more casualties being taken before you get to attack. Charging into cover can be a pain too. 10 bloodletters would normally ripp appart 10 CSMs but if they are in cover and Skarbrand is around you can easily take 5-6 casualties before you strike. Remember that charging grey knights means you always roll for dificult terrain so attack them at I1. 10 PAGKs can cause 10-11 casualties to bloodletters which isnt fun. Daemoneetes and cloud of flies daemonprinces can use their offensive grenades to offset this.

Thanks MadCat, I had suspected Skarbrand would do well in high initiative armies. I planned to start out building with a Khorne themed army, so I wanted to see if others thought he would help out the list or if people had experience with other tactics and uses for him. One that I thought of was help vs. Armor in my themed list, re-rolling to hit rear armor seemed like a plus to me .
Grey Knights do pose a big problem to the list though, striking at I1 is not a good thing for my 5+ save letters. In a case like that I would probably have to rely on Soul Grinders to spearhead my assault forces and then overwhelm any units I could single out with sheer numbers/attacks.
