just a quick question on defilers. I have one and im painting one up, but im wondering are they worth it.
I played one defiler the other week in a 1.2k game against Guard (inc. 3 Russ tanks). In all the games the defiler got taken out in round 1 of Guard shooting (the 3 tanks concentrated everything they had on it) and spent the rest of the game as a glorified canon.
Admittedly that first round allowed my troops/rhinos to get into position, but for the points i was unimpressed with the defiler. Im wondering: was it just bad luck, bad tactics, or was that the idea (i.e. to draw the fire)
Deploy youre defilers that the enemy cant see them on the first turn.Always remember, that defilers are walkers, and can shoot theyre battle cannons after mooving.
About the tactics: armour get's wasted fast against guard these days. It's actualy pretty hard to keep defilers alive against the russes.Hope this helps.
yes. i had it hidden behind a building right at the back of the board but the Russ' were still able to see it
You should expect any ordinance weapon to be targeted early on. That's just the nature of things. You can keep your defilers alive by including other high priority targets, such as princes and, to some degree, preds. Also, if you can, field multiple defilers. What's more, even if the defiler gets taken out on the first round, as you said, it sacrificed itself in order to allow the rest of your army to advance. That's not necessarily a bad trade. Plus, in your case, the defiler still had its cannon, which means it's not dead yet. Even stationary ordinance weapons are a force to be reckoned with.
IG has become one of our most challenging adversaries. It's not uncommon to lose a large quantity of your armor on the first round. We just need to find ways of adapting...

Spambot kill tally. . .337
like devastor squads or vindicators ^^. oblitorators aren't a good choice to make as additional top priority because there are too few of them. personally. i have a vindicator or two behind a wall of rhinos and/or land raiders. it's really annoying, no matter what i have.
Rabbit's got it nailed. In my opinion, you should make a point of baiting the Guard into shooting the Defiler as a way to protect your transports' advance. The battle cannon and powerful CC attacks aren't really needed against that enemy; sacrificing a Defiler to get your men in close is a walker well spent.
The alternative is to bring two Defilers. They break as easily as any medium-armor vehicle.

Defilers are great. They work well as a distraction and if left alone can cause some heavy damage. I always try fit one in for fluff reasons alone but the model and its capabilty make it worth it.
Currently play: 4000+ of Black Legion
I always bring my defiler to the game board...his ability to wipe out an entire unit every turn is enough to change the tide of every game. I always deploy him so he gets the 50 percent cover save.
just make sure he gets deployed with cover and hes good.
