I was considering picking up CSM, and I'd like to use them for competitive play. That being said, I wanted to stick to one particular Chaos God, rather than a polytheistic force. I'm deciding between Nurgle and Slaanesh, my two favorites in 40k. Which one do you feel is generally more competitive?
Nurgle, but both in combination are close to a classical 2/9 Lash list. You will have heard of it. Boring but powerful!
Do you like Obliterators? They are the classical "one of the best units in the game".
2 Nurgle Warptime flying princes
fill up with Plaguemarines: Champ, Fist, RHino, 2 Melta/Flamer/Plasma what you like.

That does look scary.
In any event, I think I like Slaanesh more for the overall look, as well as the fluff. Pink, sonic weapon-toting CSM just seem pretty neat. As for Plauge Marines, I like the wealth of possible conversions one can make with them, and they're also visually impressive.
As far as my playstyle goes, I like a versatile army with a balanced mix of close to mid-range shooting and some CC elements smattered in.
Yeah if you want all one god it has to be Nurgle. Slaanesh has amazing Princes but bad Troops. Some people like Noise Marines but they just aren't very good in all honesty. Khorne is a complimentary god and Tzeentch is the same but to a lesser degree.

If I had to rate mono-god lists competativeness, I'd put them in the following order.
Plague marines, nurgle princes, nurgle termies/chosen and oblitorators performs very well. It's not super killy, but it extremely hard to kill.
Kharne is a cheap but powerful HQ. It is probably the only list that could get away with not using demon princes or sorcerers but still remain competative. I'd put vanilla CSM squads in to hold objectives, and use Berserkers and Kharne to clear the enemy from their objectives. Take some oblitorators/preds for AT as meltabombs and fists are unreliable against smart opponents.
1k Sons are probably the best specialty troop on paper, but they are very point heavy. Tzeentch can quickly spend more points on troops than any other mono list. Great on paper, falls flat on its face in game. (And SLOW! Rhinos help, but let's be honest, coffins on wheels tend to last 1 to 2 rounds at most).
Sonic weaponry is by far the coolest weaponry in our codex. But it has always struggled to do anything for me. Great at putting wounds on infantry, but then again, so are bolters. And bolters are much cheaper.

And then there was Gordao24, and it was good.
