Is Icon of Chaos Glory the best mark to put on a CSM squad? I know re roll morale is great and its cheap, but with champion we are at ldr 10. On units like Havocs and stuff i see the use. It is your basic tactical squad, terminator and even chosen squad im asking. If IoCG is better than the other marks on those units.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
It depends largely on your dice rolling. Chaos Marine lists tend to have few squads so failing a leadership test can cripple us much more easily than, say, the Imperial Guard. If you'd rather boost your stats than play it safe, no problem...either is a good choice. Myself, I'm so notorious for biffing Ld 10 checks that I finally restricted myself to only fearless units.

I pretty well always run Fearless units (Blood for the Blood God!!) but the few times I've busted out my basic CSM they are usually carrying an IoCG. The Dice Gods, I believe, enjoy punishing me for always using Fearless models and make my CSM run for the hills every chance they get. It also helps for when my Oblits feel like Deepstriking too!
Yeah, Icon of Chaos Glory is a good thing. Daemons and Oblits can flock to it and even though you will be hard pressed to fail a leadership test it is not bad to just be safe. I tend to only run with a IoCG when I have a list that will have a deepstriking unit though as I care more about the fact that it is an icon over what it realy does.
I always take icons of chaos glory. Unless for terminators I take the slaneesh option to get the edge over imperial terminators or space marines and wipe them out first.
Even with re-rolls for morale I still fail most morale checks I'm made to take.
I am a recent convert to IoCG, and always take on units which don't have another Icon. I like its safety net thang.
IoCG is the one I use 95% of the time. It's cheap, it's good for deepstriking off of, it keeps our fear-knowing marines on the table, and it's not specialized. The marks all take the generalist troops make them a little more specialist but not as much as the cult troops. Most of the time, if I want specialist, I'll just take the superior cult troops anyway. Termies typically don't get an icon from me since I mostly use termicides, but it could be quite nice for them. I've used other icons on Raptors as well, Khorne in particular, since I have a special role in mind when I add them to a list.
But for basic troop-slot Chaos MArines? Nah, I'll stick to IoCG. Best all around cheap complement to thier already generalist nature.

The IoCG is a icon i use as for every non cult unit.
I'm going to add on to the general consensus here and tell you that I bring it with all of my CSM squads unless I am bringing them for some specific purpose or theme. With only three or four squads per army it's not a whole lot of points and frankly 250 points fleeing is very bad thing. I hate it when my units refuse to do what they should be (fleeing, dreadnoughts, etc.). I say, on our vanilla boys, bring it all the time, don't be a cheap skate and regret it later.

Would taking a tzeentch icon be all that bad? surely its expensive but on something like a chosen squad geared for close combat that 5+ could be very useful. For fluff maybe they are literally chosen by the gods and as such have a bit of a special resistance to even the strongest of weapons? I've been thinking of this idea for a super tie-up unit that can still hurt them back bad.
