First thing is first, I love me some Thousand Sons. I love them like a Coyote loves a three legged cat. They may be slow, but they pack one hell of a punch. I have noticed that I field my Aspiring Sorcerer with either Doombolt or Bolt of Change and that is about it. I am surprised that I have not put much thought into it, but an Aspiring Sorcerer could very well help fill in some gaps in a Chaos Space Marines list.
How do you run your AS and what role do you think that Thousand Sons take up in a competitive army?
I used to take doombolt and went through a phase where I took wind of chaos, but now I take Gift of Chaos.
It provides much needed close combat support. You cast it twice and have a 50% chance each time of turning, say, a terminator/HQ into a spawn which adds D6 S5 attacks into your CC. The 6" cast range is a bummer, but I usually cast it out of a rhino or while in CC (you cast it at the beginning of your turn and can shoot at a different unit in your shooting phase if not in combat)
Heck, if you are lucky you can take out carnifexes and other really high T units on a 6 (my nidzilla flatmate hates it).
Be nice to your enemies, it will make them madder!
I thought you had to role over their toughness. T4 meaning you need a 5 or 6 to get it? I may be wrong, because I havent had my codex back for weeks now. Although I might just try it out because even on 5+, taking out an enemy with one shot with no saves allowed is damn awesome. Bye bye enemy marneus calgar? Dont worry calgar, i think you look more pretty now than you did before. *mutated thing bites it own arm off*. Yup, you still do look better.
Cant wait to role 6s vs wraithlord or even just against small eldar heroes.
6 vs a nightbringer ? That would be sickeningly AWESOME.
someone confirm if i is 4+ or 5+ vs T4 models please
I for one have written off Gift of Chaos for some time, but perhaps there is something to say for it. I may yet buy some chaos spawn. What is is the deal with VP of 40 if they die. I know it is for 4th ed but no where have I seen any amendment to the ruling of dieing spawn.
I give my AS (when i do use him, not so much these days) Bolt of change, make him pretty versatile. He handles the tanks with BoC, while the Thousand sons use their AP3 bolters to shoot down infantry. The other powers like warptime and winds of chaos i dont put on a AS because i do not want 1k sons to be in an assault if i can avoid it, unless they are assiting or are assisted by another, more close combat oriented squad.
If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
yes, ZMB is right there. Anyways, its better to use them to their full potential, MEQ murderers. Terminators frustrators. The AS makes good use out of doombolt for cost and being like the normal guys, and wind of chaos from a rhino so that guys in cover dont last long either.BoC effectively cuts out either the other 8 guys shots, or is a waste of points, as its targets are never the targets that normal TS shoot at with S4 AP3 guns.
Gift is probabily the best though, people will learn to avoid them, or die. Both ways, you get to rack up big streaks with these magical bastardly awesome thousand sons. Either in whole tactical squads, or their precious terminator captain at around 170 himself.
When rarely play my Thousand Sons, I usually put Bolt of Change on my AS, mostly because I play against a lot of MCs and light armored vehicles and have been wrecked too many times by a Hive Tyrant or Carnifex.
Well, using Gift of Chaos sounds like a really good idea, I hadn't thought of using that to boost CC effectiveness. Personally I like to use Warptime (which can be used in all turns wonderfully) because it helps them with a decent CC boost which I think is really one of their two big weaknesses. I often don't use Doombolt because I feel like it's just more dakka and they already have plenty, plus the Champion does already come with a pistol. But to each his own.
Cool thread idea.
