I'm a completely new tabletop player and I decided I liked the looks of the chaos daemons. I love the idea of a mixed army, but have no idea what mix of minis to get. I'd like to stay in the 1,000 point range for now, but I might grow it later on. I will be playing against Eldar and Tyranids eventually. Any suggestions?
I currently have:
5 Plaguebearers and 5 Plaguebearer Command on order.
I'd get another box of 10 daemonettes. They do a lot better in units of 15-20. You seem to have the troops in order, but you need to decide what the real 'backbone' of the list is going to be. Usually, it means getting some of the following:
2-3 Daemon princes, Greater Daemons, or heralds of tzeentch in chariots
Fiends of Slaanesh
Bloodcrushers of Khorne
Flamers of Tzeentch
2-3 Soul Grinders
These are the real 'meat and potato' units that make up most of the raw power in your list. The troop choices are great for support and objective grabbing, but it's usually the HQs, Elites, and Heavy choices that really break your opponent, and turn the game in your favor.
On a side note, the generic Heralds are only worth it when used with chariots, and I only really like the Heralds of Tzeentch (w/bolt, master of sorcery, and we are legion) and Slaanesh (w/musk and unholy might). The other two (khorne and nurgle) are lackluster at best.
The Masque is alright, but I wouldn't use her in a smaller game. You need units that will directly damage your opponent.

Excellent suggestions, I really appreciate your time in replying! I have a few orders arriving soon, one is a mixed lot so I'm excited to see what's actually in it. Once I see what I have, I'll probably post again hopefully with a full army roster.
A few quick questions:
I have never seen any Heralds for the daemons. What do they look like and where do you get them?
What do you think about the hounds for a small army?
You make the heralds yourself, there are a few odd models you can use, for both my Tzeentch heralds I used sorcerers and champions of Tzeentch from the Warhammer Fantasy Warriors of Chaos range, they look suitably daemonic.
Hounds really arent all that they are cracked up to be, for the same amount of points you can grab a bloodletter who is scoring and has a power weapon. In larger points games a unit can be handy for chasing down transports, battlesuits and other fast units, but generally you have better things to spend you're money on.
You just saved me a ton of frustration with the herald thing. I was going nuts!
Good advice on the dogs. They can wait now. I'm not too fond of the actual models anyway, they look too skinny.
