I have recently bought the chaos marine battleforce and wish to field it pretty soon i a 1000pts game with my friends. Anybody got any good ideas for a force using only the stuff from the kit (plus a lord i created from bitz!) and other easily created models from conversions?
The most difficult part is going to be getting adequate support against armor and other stuff like that. The easiest part is your troops, which are already nice and solid.
The Khorne Berzerkers are really easy, use the eight and convert one to the Skull Champion with either a Powerfist (YES!!) or a Power Weapon (Good, but I prefer Fists). For the models available, I'd give the Lord an Daemon Weapon (no mark) or maybe Twin Lightning Claws and put him and the Berzerkers in the Rhino together. Your other Chaos Space Marine squad should be a full one of ten. Now, getting a Rhino for them would be lovely, but if you can't, I'd give them dual Plasma or Meltaguns (Meltas are more of what you need for armor but walking with meltaguns is usually useless). Also, please include a Champion with a Powerfist (always bring one with regular CSM) and an Icon of Chaos Glory (or another one if you want to try out some other Marks).
The toughest part is going to be your Heavy Support, because you need some, but you don't have any. With the models you have and trying to stick with easier conversions, I would bring some Havocs using the extra five CSM in the box, and maybe converting one or two Possessed into more normal looking CSM Havocs. I'd say bring Missile Launchers, maybe a Lascannon or two just in case if you're worried about Necron Monoliths (big floating temple of AV doom) or Land Raiders (mobile "transport" tanks for painful Space Marine units).
The hard truth is that if my mental estimation is correct you will need another unit anyway, even if you brought the Possessed as their own unit (I wouldn't. General consensus is that they are overpriced and therefore not too effective compared to other cheaper CC units we have available). Buying another Rhino is a great choice. When you can, always bring Rhinos for your troops. Really what you need is Heavy Support, so, check out some of the options there and see what you like. The idea right now is to bring something that can take on enemy armor (Predators, Vindicators, etc.)
As a quick final sidenote, Havocs aren't the best Heavy choice in my opinion, however, I suggested them to try and fit into your criteria. If you really want to keep cost down, you could buy five or so more Possessed and make a unit of them, but that leaves you with two CC squads and only one squad to handle Armor, and in the latest (current) edition of 40K being able to kill Armor is generally the most important thing.
Anyway, good luck dude. Let us know if you have some more questions. (And remember that I'm not a super Chaos veteran general or anything, get a second opinion - ask some people around your store or send a Private Message to one of the long time members in the Chaos Forum, most of the time they'll be happy to help)

"If you can wait til I get home, then I swear we can make this last."
Just to reiterate... Posessed = bad, havocs = not so good, rhinos = awesomesauce...
hotspike hit things pretty much on the head. With another unit you "can" make an army from what is there but will probably regret putting some of the models together the way you did to do so later on. My advice would be to target a lower points cost, say 500 points. That way you don't put together models you aren't going to want later just to play a game.
Also I would advise mixing and matching berzerker and posessed parts to make them all khorne berzerkers. Posessed are extremely bad due to the fact that you never know what power they will end up with (power weapons and rending make them great where as scouts and fleet make them below average) and that the champion cannot take a powerfist which means a dreadnought can hold them in combat and kill the whole squad given time.
IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!

To put it bluntly, you can not field an effective chaos force with the models you have. You can field a weak one, and everything you got will be useful in a larger force, but what you have now is not enough to make a solid 1000 pt list.
A few things you should/need to pick up are as follows:
Any of those would greatly help your force, and more rhinos are required. I personally run a khorne/nurgle mix army which has done very well, so if you want more troops, both of those options work well together.
And many players will allow you to use proxies/stand in's till you get the models you need to get. Many of the ones in my area will even allow you to use boxes that are about the right size for vehicles as long as they can see that you keep getting models, even if slowly, to flesh out your force. I'm not sure about the people you're playing, so you'd have to speak with them about that.
My CSM's were a battleforce, and a lord. I added a obliterator straight away, and have added zerkers and rhino's. (Rhino's from my vanilla marines, with leftover marine HW's added on.) oh, and khorne daemons, as they're pap but look so good. Add in some terminators (combi plasma and heavy flamer and a fist) then I topped it off with kharn the betrayer, and have a fairly themed khorne army. If i were to go back to them i'd add a defiler, and some plague marines, or if i wanted to stop being fluffy a daemon prince with whip.
Do NOT use posessed, they really are bad (not as bad as spawn though, the worst unit in the dex goes to them) mix your bits for champions / conversions. (if you can scrounge some winged backpacks you have raptors, or a special character with one at least)
Hey Peter is the lord a termie or a regular power armor guy ??
Chaos Lord / Mark of Khorne / Bloodfeeder Daemon Weapon
CombiMelta / Melta Bombs / Jump Pack or Wings
7X Khorne Berzerkers / 2X Plasma Pistol
Skull champ / Power Fist / Melta Bombs
9X csm / Flamer / Meltagun / IoK
asp champ / Power Fist / Melta Bombs
9X csm / Plasmagun / Heavy Bolter / IoK
asp champ / Power Sword / Plasma Pistol / Melta Bombs
Chaos Rhino APC / Havoc Launcher/ Daemonic Possession
so this list use almost every thing in the box, plus every infantry is scoring. Being all dedicated to khorne so they are fluffy and as a big bonus, all close combat monsters.Lots of plasma weaponry, that pack a hard hitting punch but don't roll any 1s.
i packed all i could to bring you up to 1000pts..hope it please you.
They're lovely kits, they really are. however, the sorceror, or lord in ter armour just isn't competitive (than say a daemon prince, or a jump pack instead)
I'll agree with the others: Possessed make great bits, but weak units. You've got a great troop selection, but could use another rhino to help cart them around the battlefield.
You'll also need some heavy support (ie: something to crack transports so your troops can get to the juicy center). A relatively cheap but effective option you can convert is to buy a box of chaos termies, then just use a lot of gun bits and make them into Obliterators. That lets you make 4 or 5 oblits for the price of 2.
Vindis and the like are also all good options. Just depends how much money you want to sink in right now.
Also, if the lord is presently in termie armor, I'd consider making a new guy in power armor so he can ride in a rhino with the berzerkers. Keep the termie lord until you get a landraider or more termies to deepstrike him with.

well i thought that not buying anything was the catch.
