So, I was thinking about something today. With all the new codeces out lately it seems like many armies are getting special characters as an upgrade to a unit. And further recognizing trends, it seems that many people from this forum are a little sore at the newest Chaos codex and it's lack of being able to seperate specific legions.
Well, put those two things together and I had what I thought to be a rather neat idea. To begin with, I unfortunately had never seen the previous codex as I only started playing Chaos almost immediately after this one came out. Now at the risk of getting horribly flamed (ha, points for the contextual pun? Maybe if I mention it would be hard to completely cover me with the template? Ok fine it was dumb) but from what I've heard of the older system, it seems like it detracts from GW's newest idea of "simplifying" the game.
Well, looking at what we have compared to what everyone else has, I think some of our Characters would be better placed as an upgrade to a squad. The most notable examples being Kharne and Lucius. How many people take Kharn and don't put him in a squad of berzerkers? And given the ridiculous amount of special characters some of the armies are getting (not that we're an exception mind you) I don't think it would be much of a stretch to say that to keep everyone happy our next codex should just be full of Characters that alter our army enough to allow forming legions, a point I've seen on this forum before.
Now what I invision would be a minimum of 5-6+ HQ slot characters with a minimum of 4 representing the gods, and a minimum of 4 Characters that can be chosen as upgrades to squads of their respected Cults. The kicker being taking one or more of these characters would disallow using an opposing gods mark/icon within the same army while making the chosen gods Cult a troops choice (instead of say, an elite). If you wanted to go undivided then you could bring whatever you wanted, but since specialist squads (Berzerkers, Plague Marines, Raptors, Chosen, etc...) would fall under differing slots of the FOC then that would be the trade off for not being restricted.
This way, if you wanted a fluffy army you would just have to bring the corrosponding character and *POOF* you're able to adjust the army to fit the needs of your fluff.
Sorry if some of you feel this has been reposted, but I don't think I've seen it put quite like this. That and as much as I usually disagree with a lot of people who want the old ways back (I don't have a Nightlord army that I can't use 50% of anymore), I would be perfectly happy with this arrangment and it would seem to make sense to me fluffwise as well.
Let me know what you think I guess,
I actually like the Idea of the Cult specific characters, but I actually try to avoid playing with Chars as much as possible,
since I don´t believe Ahriman or any other of the Chaos chars (they are really really old and in the whole war for quite a while) would come and join a 750pt army against a little Ork outpost or whatever.
But if they make a few Cult Lords, preferably with an update that gives them immunity to instant death and a few wounds with a global effect depending on the Mark, that would be great.
So keep the Named chars, fix them for 5th Ed. and have not named Lords that you actually can use. And maybe even do the same with the Demon Princes.
Of course the whole Black Legion, meaning access to all cult should be still playable as well... but maybe with a few other restrictions.

Go check out the previous Chaos codex and see what most chaos players are "missing."
In our last codex we didn't need names for aspiring champions that had more killing power as the space marines named characters. Those were the times you could see a regular CSM squad with a souped up champion (5 power fist attacks with 2 rerolls to hit on the charge) eat up other armie's assault specialists.
On topic, however, i generally despise named characters and would prefer to be able to make my own. Sure, there is counts-as but I don't want to use the same guys with the same equipment and the same special rules over and over again.
I do think it would be nice for a return to the old Dex, as Moschaboy commented. I loved beefing up an Aspiring Champ and making him what is equivalent to a Space Marine Captain. I also like the idea of named character upgrades for squads. Kind of like Telion, or Lukas.
