Do they have any saving grace, or are they just rubbish all over? I'm considering doing an all nurgle list, and obviously beyond HQ, troops and heavy support, these are the only option I have.
Are they worth it at all? I'd rather do something than just field large numbers of plaugebearers.
I don't think so. Unless you've got an Epidemius list, they just lose out to just about every other unit the daemons have. They are our worst elite. Daemons are about getting to things quick and killing them. I could see using them in a defensive role, maybe protecting an objective. Maybe use them in larger hoards of 5-7, but then your tying up around 200 pts for a unit to maybe tie stuff up. They just dont make the cut in a daemons list for thier cost. Moneywise or pointwise.
Your bread and butter for killing power in a nurgle list are going to be you GUO's and Demon Princes. Dont look to these guys to do a whole lot of killing for you.

Look at it like this. a Beast of Nurgle is basically 2 Plaguebearers (same exact stats, including having 2 wounds).
The only difference is that the Beasts have 1d6A instead of 2, aren't a scoring unit and cost 5 more points
Not worth it
Pretty much what I thought.
Only thing I've managed to come up with is against inexperienced players. Being on a big base would generally be seen as a disadvantage, but drop 3 giant bases in the middle of their army and if they don't know exactly what they are, I can't picture them shooting much else for the next turn.
Mind you, I geuss you could do the same with bloodcrushers, they'd have a better chance to survive, and be able to do more damage afterwards with whats left. Still, can't take those in an all nurgle army.
The base thing may not work as well as I thought. I thought they were bigger with 60mm bases, never seen one irl before.
i suppose with the 40mm bases they may be slightly easier to deepstrike than an equivilent unit of plaugebearers though.
Ok, now I'm officially confused. On the website it says they come with 40mm bases. In the codex the bases are clearly bigger. Can anyone tell me which one it is? Sorry about the number of edits.
Last edit. I had a quick look at a bit of maths, and if I've got it right there is a very high chance of the beats having more attacks than the equivilent number of plaugebearers. May be worth it just for a bit less monotony in an all nurgle list.

Yeah, they're just not good at all. It's odd, considering how fantastic the other elite choices in the army are.

Only take them in an all epidemus list. Which also should look something like this:
Herald of nurgle with breath of chaos
a few beasts
tons of plague bearers
3 demon prince of nurgle.
Eldar -APOC- 6500 Points
Chaos Daemons -Fate Crusher- 3500 Points
Grey knights - 1000 Points
Replace Beasts with Nurglings
