Welcome to Librarium Online!
-sigh- Hey all, I am thinking of turning the tide and opening my forces to chaos... formly a Space Marines player.I would like to start off with a 500-750 pt starter army. I've done some research and found that a Demon Prince is the HQ of choice, not sure which troop types are good for a new adept. I'm thinking I want a little more CC as my space marine was a bit shooty. . or so I like to think. But I'd like a well balanced army that is able to expand. Maybe a few tips/future units would be perfect. Everything is helpful!!
Standard chaos space marines are an outstanding troop choice, they get bolt pistols and CCW, and the bolter, making them more flexible than standard space marines which only get one or the other. If you are really interested in getting stuck in khorne berserkers get the extra attack and furious charge(but do not get a bolter or special weapons options), tough to be better in close combat, few troops are feared more in cc. Plague marines are considered one of the best troop choices available to any army. but at the starter army level i generally stick with standard chaos space marine.
Noise marines are an interesting choice, though the consensus is that the sonic weaponry is too expensive, the extra +I can be devastating in CC, making power weapons instead of power Phists a real option with these squads, usually kitted out with a doom siren these can be very scary.
What it really comes down to is that all chaos troops can be amazing if used right. the hardest to use is the thousand suns, but that is only because their special affect is really powerful against armored infantry, but no better than a bolter against hordes of 5+ armor saves
I think the most important thing to do when starting a Chaos Army is to get two Rhinos and two Chaos Space Marines Squads right off the bat, along with a Daemon Prince. You will be able to make 20 Chaos Space Marine models, with 4 special weapons. I would suggest doing two models with meltaguns and two with flamers, making an Icon Bearer in each squad without actually gluing the Icon on the pole. That way, you could use some mounting putty to change them out each battle. Make two champs each with a Powerfist. The Rhinos are extremely important because it is the only way to make our troops mobile. Literally every army you make will use them, considering we don't have the ability to deep-strike, drop-pod, Razorback or anything our Troop Choices into battle other than using Rhinos and Land Raiders. The Daemon Prince is just an all around beast. My two cents. If you want four cents, I would recommend adding Defilers, Obliterators, Plague Marines and more Plague Marines. Good luck!
"Men attract not what they want but instead what they are."
Defiler's are fairly popular choices for heavy support, Usually opting out of the heavy flamer for another CC weapon. I myself run 2 defiler's and a predator
And you just cant go wrong with a Daemon prince and 2 squads of 10 in rhino's. Toss in a Defiler and a squad of zerkers in a rhino maybe and you have a pretty solid base to work from.
I would stray away from zerkers, if anything grab some thousand sons in a rhino, they tear up marines like nothing else, and theyr models are just plain cool to add to that.
all of the above points are valid, preds are always good, and when you can, I would get some raptors. I dont know why but these guys just do wonders for me, shove a cheap khorne jump pack lord in there and they can deal with a multiple of threats. (I may get some disagreements from this)
noise marines are....expensive.
pluage marines are the bee's knee's.
zerkers are silly.
sons are killy!
And of course defilers are too good to pass up, but I would stock up on some good troop choices first, then heavy, then elite, then fast attack.
As mentioned above, Plague Marines, Khorne Berzerkers (which if you're looking for the CC these are your guys) and our basic Chaos Space Marines are the best troops choices we have and, though some may argue, the best troop choices in the game. Our Noise Marines are fairly good without the Sonic Weaponry (due to the fact the Sonic Weapons cost too much) and the power of the Thousand Sons has dwindled since the new rule book because of how many cover saves your opponent can get from them (and since you said you're coming from a shooty army and want to change it up I would steer clear of the Thousand Sons). Also as stated above, Defilers are amazing, they're not only very killy but have a huge bullseye painted on their head which will let your Rhinos go by un-noticed. The only real units to pass up in our codex are Possessed Marines and Chaos Spawn, everything else can be useful in the right circumstances (some more than others however).
World Eaters: W-47 D-10 L-9
Necrons: W-19 D-3 L-2
Protectorate of Menoth: W-36 D-0 L-7
thanks everyone!! Actually this transformation into darkness is going alot better than I had thought
I'd suggest picking whichever army visually appeals to you the most. Check out the GW HQ section of the site for examples of the Cults and other Traitor Legions.
Once you've found a group of models that you like, THEN build a list.
Because to make them useful, you need a land raider....Silly? Khorne Berzerkers are one of the BEST troops we can field, why tell him to stray from them?
but seriously I just find that anything they can do, a raptor squad with khorne marks can do much much better.
