The last few weeks i been playing DOW2 and its made me want to get back into the real game. After some agonising days of choosing which army i have come to the conclusion i want to play Chaos but i have a few questions about starting a new army.
Well firstly i was looking at the different legions i could choose to make and want to choose word bearers (Although some painting guides seem to use like 15 paints which seem outragous to me ) And was going to buy the battle force and was wondering if this was a good idea and also i was wondering if i can give most of my troops and future troops the mark or nurgle?. I was going to go death guard but wasnt sure if they had any special rules. I know they use alot of plague marines but would i be able to use normal chaos space marines as plague marines? or do i have to go buy lots of plague marines?.
I cant get hold of a codex at the moment so any info on either of the legions would be appreciated as im not 100% sure whether i will go word bearers or go death guard (If i can use the marines as i said above ofc).
Well, under the current codex, there are functionally no legions. Everything is a mish-mashed warband of whatever. That said, you can still theme your army pretty strongly to several of the legions as they once were (minus any special rules goodies).
Most Chaos Marine units can get Icons to help them along, and each diety got a special cultist troop unit (berzerkers, plague marines, thousand sons, and noise marines). Meanwhile, all the different daemons the Word Bearers used to rely on got short-changed into a generic "lesser daemon" entry that's basically a nekkid marine with a 5+ invuln and fearless.
My first advice is always: "Buy the codex and read it". You can't really get a good idea of what you want to field until you've done that.
As to buying models, the battleforce is a pretty good deal that offers a lot of conversion potential thanks to all the bits you'll get from the possessed it includes and the pile of chaos marine bodies. Unless you want pure cult troops, it's hard to go wrong picking up at least one of these sets. and even then, you can mix in the extra Chaos Marine bits with the cult bits to make extra cult troops if that's what you're after so it's still a fair buy.
Wargamer Haven, my little cyberspace blogspot.
Funny enough I started again because of DoW2 too!!! Im still a bit of a n00b with the TT advise, but heres my advise.
First up get the chaos codex, its straightfoward enough to pick up quickly and get a feel for most units before you evan begin to play. You will also notice that the codex has no limitations for units in different armies. SO to answer another question, yes you can have normal Chaos Marines in Death Guard colours and you can have world bearers with the mark of nurgle. If you like both armies so much you could mix the two. Have all youre plague marines as Death Guard and youre other troops as World Bearers, perhaps one HQ in World Bearers colours and one in Death Guard. Another point about the Death Guard models is that it seems a lot of people use normal Chaos Marines witha little conversion as Plague Marines, as there metal models arent soo popular with many people. Im sure someone will be able to give their opionions soon too! Enjoy the game.
Ohh one last thing, you can pretty much use youre DoW2 chaos army as inspiration. Though some things are a little wack compared to TT, it does a good job at representing a chaos undivided list from a TT prospective. I also have paintind a sourcerer to look like the one from DoW2, im sure you can find things you would want to include from the PC game to youre army
Thanks for the advice Xardian I will probably get a codex in the next few days when I convince my friend to start playing again so I have someone close by to play with. Its good to know I can have a mishmash of the warbands and I think I am definately going to try and keep my army with the theme of nurgle.
And Scorpion tis nice to know its had the effect on others too ^^. Yeah on the game I used to love playing the plague champion so I know I would definately try and make him even if he might be a random add into the game not sure if he would be TT usable untill i get the codex though. I will probably do as you said troops as word bearers and plague marines as death squad before when I was trying to choose I was confusing myself alot but this simplified it.
I am definately going to try and model my own plague marines though I just dont like the GW's metal ones. I did good in art in school so I should do ok hopefully . But that will happen in time I dont have the cash to go crazy with ideas at the moment. I'll just get myself set up with the basics for now I think. Thanks again both of you it was a big help.
