So, what do you guys find more effective 7 plague marines, or 10 chaos marines (roughly similar cost) I've been running both in my army and have mixed feelings about them. On the one hand, sometimes my plagues seem absolutely invincible, but then sometimes you run into a wealth of ap2- weapons and poof there goes a ton of points. So what is the better value points wise and which of these two choices do you feel is more effective on the tabletop?
The Plague Marines a hundred times over. So what if you run into lots of AP2, that's a minor problem that can be quickly remidied with the application of a Vindicator shell. Also I don't know why you are comparing 2 different codex's. I am going to assume you ment Vanilla Chaos Space Marines?
Although, it is rather unfair to compare these two directly as they do different things. Plague Marines are a very reliable home objective squad and bullet magnet, while the Chaos Marines have numerous rolls. They are good at assualts, supporting other units, and a firebase.
I would still rather have 7 Plague Marines in a Rhino with 2 Melta Guns, and a champ with a fist. This squad is versatile and not very epensive for what the squad does.

This choice is better made by considering your army as a whole. Given similar set-ups - with melta guns, champ w/fist, IoCG on the Vanillas for instance - are a whopping point difference of 1, you'd probably have to take the CSM loaded for a more particular reason for them to be worthwhile over the PMs, since they get so many goodies for their points, and have better survivability. Unless you're going against an army with a ton of single target AP 1 or 2 weapons, or everything denying armor saves, PMs will last longer than CSM even with the 3 fewer in the squad.
CSM are obviously better with a heavy weapon included if that's needed. A PM heavy list always needs to find other places to fit those in. But if you need a basic double melta/flamer squad (in a Rhino, of course), PMs are tough to pass up.
Objective Sittering: Chaos Space Marines have no cheap options for holding our home objectives. Probably our best choice would be a 5-6 man lesser daemon squad; although it's still debatable whether less daemons can hold objectives. Overall, our troops are simply too expensive for holding them back, especially once you consider that most other armies can objective squat for half the point cost. Generally speaking, you're far better off advancing them forward for the first 3-4 rounds of the game, and then returning during the late game to snatch objectives.

I'd say if your going plague, go all plague. Not just one plague and 2 normal for instance, because a single plague is very easy to deal with.
I find them easier then most, as i'm a dark eldar player and I have on average 25 ap 2 lance weapons (about half 36 inch, other half 12 inch) and 3-6 dissintegrators, and on top of that my standard HQ unit will deal 5-6 power weapon wounds a turn in combat, and striking a I of 5 or 6, your losing most of your squad in one turn, then the rest in yours.
Thanks for your help everyone! I think I'm going to run with the general consensus and go all plague. However I only have 7 plague marine models while I own 21 chaos marine models. In general would most people be okay with me using the chaos marine models as plagues if I added a little green stuff and painted them in the same way as my metal plagues? I don't play in tournaments or anything but I do play with random people at stores a lot.
If you add green stuff and paint them to look like Plague Marines, i don't see why someone would say you can't call them Plague Marines.

Awesome thanks! So if I did what is suggested in that tutorial I should have no problems with people? Im going to go nurgle my marines up tonight, thanks everyone!
You could spray paint standard plastic CSM green, and call them Plague Marines. No one's going to complain if they don't have big green stuff bellies, or FW conversions.
Obviously, you have a much nicer army that you can be proud of if you put a little more work into it, but basic marines are WYSIWYG enough to call them all kinds of different versions from the codices.
