very new to 40k. when i was a kid i had a few models and now i want to go back to it.
i have laying about some old bit and over the past few months iv been building an ebay army, but iv come to the point ware i don't know what im doing.
iv been told a few things by different people but only in the form of simple tactics and the like. so ill give you a list of what i have.
2x 10 chaos space marines
power fist on one
heavy bolter with the others
mark of chaos on both
2x 10 Khorne Berzerkers
mark of khorne on both
1x rhino for Khorne Berzerkers
1x daemon prince
Juggernaut with champion of khorne
4x terminators with 1x Abaddon
landraider for Khorne Berzerkers
As i said i know nothing apart from a few basics about what unit is meant for what and that i need to put my Berzerkers in a rhino/landraider otherwise they cant get into close combat. i also know that i want my deamon prince to have wings so her can go in behind the landraider. not yet decided on the powers i want to give him.
obviously im going to go out and get my hands on a codex but after looking at one for a while im a little none the wiser as iv not yet played the game. 100% n00b.
basically what im asking is am i going in 100% the wrong direction? iv looked at the 'how to make a chaos army' sticky and whilst my army is different its not a million miles away-ish.
my thinking was 2 sets of basic space marines with a little beefing up, some close combat berzerkers with trasport and a daemon prince HQ to go up with them , heavy support from the havocs and dreadnought....and the others is shit i had in a box from when i was 13 ¬_¬
any tips, suggestions would be amazing. my aim is a 1500 point army that is fun to play with.
thanks for your time.
you have the basics but needs few things.
1. a rhino for all of your troops - these are not mandatory and are not nessecarily easy to use, learning when and why to stay in or get out of your transports can win you a game. but they give you mobility,
2. a power fist on each of your aspiring champions, power swords are useless against most vehicles and do not have a good chance against most monstrous creatures
3. a DP with wings and warptime is te most effective hq chaos has, and having him run behind your rhino's can give him very good cover.
abbadon is too expensive, he can be a real beast, but he is hard to run when he costs you 1/5 of your army. better to get two defilers. juggernaughts do not appear in the current codex unless you have a khorne lord on a steed. land raiders can be used, but their costs are prohibitive and throw a lot of your hopes and dreams on a unit that can be take out by a lucky bright lance before you even get to move.
start off small. build 2 units of troops and your DP, once you have them, find someone to play this low point value game. find out how the things work, add points to games/trade units around, find out what works for yo, and read these forums. some of the best advice you will find in peoples critiques of others armies. then make an army with specifics and people will give you advice
HQ: Take Nurgle winged prince with warptime or Lash prince with wings. Abadon is ok for apocalypse games but in regular play he is to many of your points tied up in one unit especially as he needs a LR and termies to join him.
Elites: Dreads are medeocre, one if ok but don't buy any more. Termies should be 4 combiplasmas or meltas and a single CF/PF, known as the karmoon special. If you add another termie then consider an icon. Use these to telepport in from icons rappid firing plasma as you arrive, then next turn fire bolters and charge.
Troops: 2x 10 CSM with pairs of meltas (never take a heavy weapon in a CSM unit) and a PF champ. IoCG or IoK are the best icons to take. Berserkers need a PF and that shold be fine. 10 man berserker units are strong but you can get away with 8 if you need to shave a few points. All these squads need a transport so 3 rhinos and a LR or just 4 rhinos. Adding combimeltas to a rhino can help berserkers to open up transports to charge the passengers. It also gives the enemy an incentive to shoot empty transports which keeps your other tanks alive. If he doesn't shoot them he could easily loose one of his tanks to a 6" melta shot.
Fast: dont bother
Heavy: vindicators, AC/2LC preds and defil;ers with 2xCCW are good. A LR is ok but costs a lot but you also save on the cost of one rhino when you get one. Sadly havocs with heavy weapons are too expensive and a bit static. Keep them cheap with MLs or HBs and 6 squad members.
Quorn! - Protein for the Protein God.
so im looking at:
mark of chaos
power fist with both
heavy bolter with one
2x khonre berzerkers
mark of khorne
mark... not sure on that one yet ill look it up
would this take me up to about 1.5k points?
if i do that i have a juggernaught of khorne, abaddon, and fabius spare. i can sell them on ebay a get some rhinos and look out for a second hand defiler... im on a budget.
Hi, with the units & vehicles you have listed below there is easily 1500 points, possibly as much as 2000 depending on what options you take.
Personally would not use the Dreadnought due to "Crazed" special rule - not keen on fielding anything that has a chance of causing damage to my army instead of the enemies. This includes any Plasma weapons too because of the "Gets hot" rule, that and high cost of Plasma pistol / gun puts me of including them in any army.
A Lord with mark of khorne riding the juggernaut could make for a great character or army general (and a good center-piece model too). However I would not take it with the units you listed as they all have Rhino's - instead how about using one of your Marine units as Chosen with khorne icon - makes a good body guard for a lord, and can still use a rhino.
Or take Terminator armour and have him lead your squad of Terminators. As you have 4 squads with Icons it makes Deep-striking safe, and if you only take a squad of 4 to accompany the Lord you can take a Land Raider as transport option instead of a Heavy Support choice.
A lord with terminators and 2 units of Berserkers in 3 Land raiders supported by 2 Marine squads and a Defiler is a pretty scary army to face.
As for Daemon Prince HQ, it may be deadly but it is also more vulnerable, your enemy can target it as it can not join any units or use any transports.
In the end a lot boils down to what races you usually face and what battlefield tactics you prefer - khorne being best for getting stuck into close combat and nurgle better suited to survive longer range fire-fights.
Hope that my ramblings are of some use to you.....

Quick note on Chaos Dreads: As MadCat mentioned, they aren't the best tool in the shed for getting the job done. However, they aren't *that* horrible for the cost, especially if you're also fielding a list of ultra aggressive units, such as princes & defilers. Chaos can actually do a decent job at spamming the table with lots of walkers and monstrous creatures. Dreads help to achieve this goal. Plus, they provide a long range support unit that is cost-effective at busting light armor (missile launcher arm).
