I'm coming back to 40k after a long absence, i stopped playing a few weeks after 3rd ed came out and pretty much ruined the game for me at the time.
So now that im back i have lots of "classic" models to play with and a few to update and from reading the forum it seems like if your not running a cookie cutter dual lash list then all the mech will ruin you in a few turns.
I remeber the days of charging a shadowsword/baneblade/reaver titan with Abbadon and his termies after teleporting in and ripping it to pieces back when his sword ignored all armor and shields, going into overwatch with a squad of marines and blasting a elday jetbikes as the flew past, or lossing entire squads of bezerkers to a single vindicare assasin, lol
Do people still play for fun or is everything a tourney attitude with plasma/melta spam?
You can design any list from the codex you wish. The chaos codex tends to have certain combinations and unit loadouts that work well together (as do all codexes) and others less so (spawn). If you don't want to get the tournament competetive units in your list then don't.

How people play is all up to your local gaming group. I know in my parts, we do run a lot of tourneys (Rogue Trader/'ard Boyz), but also do campaigns for fun. We've got a lot of younger guys, so against them one doesn't need an ideal list. A few are more seasoned vets who like to play more competitively, so it's another story vs them.
So, find a group, and feel it out. I run a fairly pure Nurgle list, and don't use even one Lash; it can be done! Our troops do lend themselves nicely to taking a lot of melta and plas, though.
