I'm playing a few fun little games with some friends as the beginning of a large, arcing campaign. It's basicly 300 points with 2 possible cut down FOCs. It basicly comes down to 0-3 troops, 0-1 Elite and either 0-1 FA or 0-1 Heavy. So i kinda need to make a list for each (the heavy and the fa version).
For the heavy list, the defiler sticks out as being fairly awesome. it's got a great range, no armour saves from the cannon and will work as anti-armour in the assault. I was thinking defiler and 56 plague marines, 2 with meltas. keep 3 at the back and the 2 meltas and the defiler as the main 'killing' forces.
For the fast attack variant, it's a bit more of a question mark. our FA mostly suck and at 300 points seem like a pretty bad idea (7 nurgle bikes? ). I basicly end up looking at 5 plague marines and 5 melta gun chosen. It feels pretty vulnerable tho. One thing i was drawn to tho was tousand sons.. ap3 bolters should pay dividends in that small a game, maybe the melta chosen and 4 sons with a sorcerer.
Anyone got other ideas? I could potentially get a dread in, but i'm not sure i trust it in killteam.
Is this the killteam from the battle missions book? If so, and you are playing it as its written in there, a defiler may struggle. Its designed for a small field with a LOT of terrain. A defiler is huge, and on a small board with a lot of terrain theres a fair chance of it failing a dangourous terrain test at some point and becoming immobilised. Also, due to the close up nature of the kill team game, its going to be in melta range a lot, and losing half your army points to one shot doesnt sound appealing.
Id be more tempted to take 1 or 2 obliterators if you are doing a heavy support version. Good all round and can adapt to all situations.
For fast attack, I would go with raptors. Mainly because theres not much option. 5 of them, 2 meltas and power sword champion should take care of most things. Especially if using the proper kill team rules of no squad coherency needed as they are individuals.
Aye, it's from battle missions, so squads are individuals and the leadership tests at 50% of your model count.
Not sure i follow all your reasoning on the defiler. It's a walker so treats difficult as difficult, not as dangerous like other vehicles, so it shouldn't be that hard to avoid a dangerous test. It's likely the killteam stuff will be played on a 4x4 which is enough to make use of the defilers range, tho of course the amount of terrain will be a factor as in any game (i'm not expecting theboard to be packed tho).
Likely opponents are crons and eldar, possibly blood angels as well.
Oblits are something I've slowly been going off. My usual marine opponents have taken to lascannoning them in the face, instant deathing them on a 3 to hit, 2 to wound and leaving me with a 5+ save (or 4 in cover). With eldar i'm likely to be coming up against fire dragons, so their s8 ap1 will do much the same and with oblits being slow and purposeful, they're going to be able to out manouver me even on foot. My heavy flamers also have less range than their ap1 instant death shots.
re: raptors, i don't have to take a FA choice, it's 0-1.. i'll try and make it clearer. the FOCs (which one i get will be random) are:
0-2 fast attack
0-1 fast attack
There's the option of Terminators, but I've a feeling the crons will be running either destroyers or a couple of heavy dests which will be able to kite me and mow me down. Some low ap long range shooting would be welcome..
