I'm just embarking on the CSM for the first time and I would like your help.I asked a similar question on two other army forums and got a great response. I could ask for your favorite 1k, 1.5k or 2k lists, but I find it more helpful if I ask you what the top five different units you wouldn't live without on your CSM army list and the lowest five you wouldn't use; maybe because they are too expensive or just ineffective. Please exclude summoned Daemons. Thanks a million.
1- Daemon Prince
2- Khorne Berzerkers
3- Plague Marines
1- Chaos Spawn
2- Possessed Chaos Space Marines
3- Chaos Bikers
4- Chaos Havocs
5- Chaos Raptors
Now, Chaos Raptors and Havocs are only in there because you said not to include summoned daemons, otherwise they wouldn't have made my bottom five, but I still wouldn't play with them.
World Eaters: W-47 D-10 L-9
Necrons: W-19 D-3 L-2
Protectorate of Menoth: W-36 D-0 L-7
Top 5 chaos bad asses
Deamon Prince, altough I actually seem to do well with just basic chaos lords.
top 5 chaos wash outs
1. Winged Nurgle warptime prince
2. Plague marines
3. More Plague marines
4. Even more Plague marines
5. Chaos spawn (only kidding, Even yet more Plague marines)
3. Summoned lesser daemons
4. Havocs (apart from 4 flamers in a cheap mechanised squad)

Quorn! - Protein for the Protein God.
Top 5: (Oh, and I play Emperor's Children, so I'm biased towards Slaanesh)
Noise Marines (for fluff and for shootiness!)
Chaos Lord (mainly because Lucius is good enough)
Possessed (too reliant on getting a good result on the Daemonkin roll)
Spawn ('nuff said)
Defiler (attracts firepower like there's no tomorrow)
Raptors (haven't actually used them, but codex entry doesn't seem to give too many options for them)
(Lesser Daemons (need their points for Marines/Termies))
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
1. Deamon prince, one of the best hq choices, i like mine winged and with a Defensive mark, like MoT or MoN
2. Khorne Berserkers, Plague marines, and CSM - give them a power fist and they can handle anything. hard to find better troops
3. Defilers - they draw a lot of fire away from our rhinos,
4. Oblits - the most versatile heavy support any army can have
Bikes - too expensive
Spawn - not consistent and too expensive
possesed - inconsistent and unreliable
Havocs - can not move and fire, better uses for the Heavy slot, like defilers and oblits
the only thing keeping me from using raptors is that they are not scoring.
same problem with chosen and terminators. All three of them have about the same utility
1. Daemon Prince
4. Noise Marines
5. Summoned Daemons of any variety
The Wolf time is upon us!
Rep for the Rep God! Positive for the Positive Throne!
Armies: Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Emperors Children, Necrons, Eldar
1. Daemon Prince
4. Havocs, put em in cover and give em 4xautocannons, transports will have no chance
5. Summoned Daemons
As most everyone has pointed out our daemons, spawn, posessed, and all of our fast attack options stink. Other than that you really cannot go wrong and it comes down to personal preference.
If you are going for powergaming our top 5 would be:
1. Plague marines
3. Daemon Princes
4. combi plas termis
5. Basic CSM
EDIT: Unsung hero of all CSM lists = Rhinos!
IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!
I survived LO Chat thanks to: Karmoon, Rabbit, Process, Tossy and Meish.
It's amazing the similarities in the top and bottom lists. The most common picks (so far) are:
1) Daemon Prince
2) Plague Marines
Special mention to : Rhinos, Regular CSM, Khorne Berserkers
1) Chaos Spawn
2) Anything Summoned
Special mention to: Havocs
I think this helps me a ton more than just lists. Thanks and keep them coming!
