First up, if this topic has come up before, I'm sorry, but every time i do a forum search on a topic, my computer just hangs, so I give up.
Daemonic weapons look kinda cool, but I'm not sure they are cost effective. I was thinking of giving my Khorne based Chaos Lord (set on a juggernaught) the ole Bloodfeeder, but it costs 40 points. The chance at 18 attacks on the charge makes me drool, but two chances to roll a one and then not attack at all? Is it worth it or is it just a plain gamble? What about the other types of Daemonic weapons, are they good? I'd love to hear the scoop on these potentially devastating weapons. I really enjoy a non MEQ weapon, if it can be used wisely.
Really it depends on how competitive you want to be, and how willing you are to take a risk. Personally I see it as one of the blessings/curses of playing chaos. We are powerful and destructive, however sometimes we get burned by the power.
My friend plays World Eaters, and his Lord runs around with a Bloodfeeder. He does roll a one every game or so, but he doesn't leave his Lord without a bodyguard, so even when he sits for a turn, the Berzerkers can do damage for him. However, on average he ends up with about 12 attacks a round, which is more than enough to make most people cry.
In my Alpha Legion, I'm going to most likely give my Lord the Blissgiver. High initiative, and a little bit of instant death for a cheap price should be pretty fun. It'll take a bit longer before I can really do some playtesting, but I will update on my experiences with the Slaanesh D. weapon.
Your chances of rolling a 1 are 11/36 or roughly 1/3. Let's say he gets 3 combats a game, he has a (again roughly) 70% chance of hurting himself at least once in your game (80% if you get 4 combats)
I would say that only use him if you can accept that he will *probably* hurt himself and *probably* screw up at least once. As has been said, if he has bodyguards to cover him it's fine, and if you can live without him working that's fine too (like I would say don't use a Librarian if you can't live with a power not working)
(Edit, those percentages go up if you don't win combat and you have to fight again on oponents Assault phase)
I use d. weapons purely for fun, I probably wouldn't if I was competitive, but taking out whole squads in one turn never fails to amuse me, and more than ompensates for the turn where he does nothing.
Do you get an invulnerable save against wounds taken by the Daemonic weapon? I know that there are no armour saves.
I've considered going with a Lord and Blissgiver, especially against the Tyranid army I face with 2-3 Trygons that have 6 wounds each. On an assault I'd get 5 attacks. I would strike first and on a 3+ i hit, so on average I'm going to hit about 3-4 times. Toughness on a Trygon is 6 though, and the Lord is only str 4, so I'd have to roll a 6 to kill it outright. Statistically speaking, you have a one in 6 chance, so if I hit 3 times, that's only a 50% chance of killing it, and if I don't, I've got 6 attacks coming back at me. It's a gamble and I usually don't like to gamble that much.
I'd rather go with a Daemon Prince with Lash of Submission (cheaper than lord after lord upgrades to terminator armor or gets a mount, plus daemon weapon and mark) or Warp Time (about the same price as lord w/upgrades). The DP has 1 more WS, 2 more STR, 1 more base attack, 1 more wound, and has eternal warrior. Far, far superior to a Lord with a Daemon weapon in most cases in my opinion.
Daemon weapons are just kind of fun. Not extremely competitive, as most lists don't include lords. If you really want to have fun with a daemon weapon though, pick up typhus. He has a daemon weapon that also counts as a force weapon, and he gets poisoned attacks. All that at I5 makes for a scary beast!
The day will not save them. And we own the night.

I tried the Daemonic weapon (Khorne's own Bloodfeeder) today against the Tyranids. First time I got only 4 extra attacks and on the next round when it really mattered, the thing rebelled against me and I died in the ensuing combat. I'll try it again for fun to see if I get a different result. I can see the point to use them for fun games and not in competition; they are far too random especially Bloodfeeder. I'll tell you though, if I could have rolled a different result, the game could have been set on it's ear. I have to admit they are fun in a way.
Bloodfeeders are pretty fun.. but it's counterproductive when you get 7 1's..
I want to try out a Deathscreamer or a Blissgiver, but my only problem is modelling the bloody thing.
