I have not been playing 40k too long and I am in the process of building my chaos army, and I was wondering what the general consensus is in regards to wysiwyg for icons on your hq units.
Basically, I am planning on having a black legion army and I don't want to have to have 5 different lords or sorcerors with different icon shoulders and colour schemes or whatever.
Is it just the case that I can have my one.neutral coloured sorcerer and I can say before the game begins "this sorcerer has mark of tzeench, doombolt and warptime, ok?" Or would someone be well within their rights to not accept it because a tzeench icon is not clearly displayed? Do you have any experiences of this?
I wondered the same thing. I put custom icon banners directly on the shoulders of the unit I want to have it so they aren't holding them. I wanted to attach a magnet to each so I could mix and match, but I'm really not that talented. So in my matches which are all friendly and not competitive, I point out before the match what icons are what and usually that is ok. But those are friendly games and no one has complained (thank God). I've never played an official tournament so I'm really not sure about them.
I usually leave mine without an icon, and say before the match, but again I only ever play friendly matches and never tournaments. Still I'd say as long as nothing else is shown (e.g MoN when you want MoT) then it shouldn't matter too much.
I had a squad that I was really impressed with the paint job I did on the Undivided icon. Since it was all friendly games, I just explained that they had no mark, I just thought I did a baller job on painting. No one had any problems with it.
The day will not save them. And we own the night.
CSM: W:25, D:3, L:9
DE:W:2, D:0, L:0
I've been debating this heavily as well. I built up (but didn't paint) most of a World Eaters army under the old codex and under the new codex, it's not really that great or themed any more. I'm now planning on swapping out some arms and heads on the Bezerkers with some normal CSM that I purchased and painting everything in a Black Legion color scheme. It would be nice to have dedicated and converted squads for each Mark, but that's completely unrealistic in terms of time and money spent. Unless you are playing a themed army or never fool around with your army list , I don't see any point in painting up your squads dedicated to a specific god. Especially as it says that you lose the ability from the Icon if the bearer dies - why have a bunch of cool, bloated looking MoN terminators that become vanilla T4 Termies after the Icon bearer dies when you could save a lot of time, money, and effort buying FW stuff or converting your own when you can just use the standard box set and say one guy has an IoN? For regular CSMs, I think you could make the icon on top of the standard pole interchangeable.
I just hope they don't release a god-specific CSM codex in the future after I have completed my Black Legion army. I'll be pretty upset...
"Ten thousand thundering typhoons!"
Just so you're aware, pile, they have mentioned they want to do legion 'dexes at some point (Death Guard, World Eaters, etc.). They might just come out as White Dwarf supplements, but I've still got my fingers crossed for them.
And as far as WYSIWYG goes, I'd say it's different for Icons vs Marks. Marks, you can't necessarily model on things unless you theme the whole model (though a should pad might suffice). Icons, you can have on the model in the form of a symbol, or banner.
No problem just letting your opponent know what Marks are where, but Icons should be modeled since they have a specific game function (Deep Striking stuff within its range) for the individual model it's on.
Is there a tournament player who could tell us what would happen in a tourney? Are you stuck with an icon glued to your model or can you specify?
I'd be kind of surprised if tournaments cared, I mean heck, Games Workshop has changed what icons look like a time or two..... How could you explain that?
My general rule of thumb is that so long as all of one thing is representing the same thing and its clear enough its fine for tournament play.
So fielding an undivided Icon as nothing, or calling all your undivided banners Marks of "whatever" would be fine so long as all of them were the same. The only problem i would have is if unit "A" has an undivided mark that counts as this and squad "1" has an undivided mark that counts as that.
What I did for my chaos space marine units is drilled a pin hole on the top of the icon berrors backpack and just added a pin to all teh various Icons. This way I can swap out all of the Icons based on whatever they are for the game.
I also painted my sorcceror in non specific colors and I just inform my opponents what mark and spells thay have for the game.
For my Icons I made them polls that stick up from the ground then magnetized them to the bases. So, if I want them with an Icon I can add one nice and fast.
