As I mentioned in the army list thread I'm looking to start 40k in the new year with the Chaos Marines!
My question now is whether I can save some bucks! I have the Asssault on Black Reach box set, and I haven't really dealt with any models both chaos or loyalist for 40k yet. I'm wondering if the space marines in the Assault on Black Reach box are close enough to the chaos marines that I can use them in the army. I realize I'd probably have to scrape off any loyalist sigils, but does anyone think this would be a good idea; or are they completely different so that the army would look silly?
Thanks for your time!,
As a fellow Canadian, I feel your pain expense wise. 40K models in Canada are way too expensive compared to other places in the world. The Loyalist models are different in a few ways: the shoulder pads do not have various marks of chaos, the helmets are slightly different, our armour markings are different, our backpacks are different slightly, some cc weapons are different, the Captains and Veterans are really different and some of our guns are chaosified with skulls and such. Are they so different that you can't use them? I'm not so sure. You can paint them in Legion colors and you can buy the shoulder pads from Games Workshop. To me, if you don't need the rulebook and templates, you should look into the Chaos Battleforce. I got mine off Ebay for about $35 cheaper than you can buy it in Canada off the shelves. You can get some deals from other online stores like Maelstrom or Minwargaming. The Battleforce comes with some core forces you will need (the Possessed outstanding) with the right combination's of weapons. The choice is yours, but I'd go with the Battleforce dude.
Thanks! I am looking to get the Battleforce for (or after) Christmas, but I already have the Assault on Black Reach, so I was just looking for a use of the models rather then sitting around.
Use em. Shave off all the loyalist nonsense, and mix them in with Chaos. They could be Chaos'ed with a simple paint job, but once you get the Battleforce, you'll have enough spare bits to mix in some stuff to really make them legit.
The battle force is a good starting place and will provide enough spares to further convert your black reach models. Depending on your modelling skills, purchasing some green-stuff (or similar epoxy putty if you don't want the gw brand, try kneadatite, it works out slightly cheaper) can allow you to personalise and convert all of your models to make your army not only chaosy but also unique. Other than that just use all of the black reach models, if you later spread them between your squads, then the diffeences don't matter and make for a more diverse army.
Awesome, thanks guys!
It'll save some bucks and make me not feel like a moron for rushing out and buying it two years ago. >.>
How about the dreadnaught? Is that pushing it? I haven't really seen either one in person, but the codex Chaos dred looks pretty particular with those axels and what not. Would greenstuff save this machine, or would it be better off shipped to Bartertown?
Thanks a lot guys!
It depends on the look you want, and your sculpting/modelling abilities.
Lots of spikes, and some sculpting should pull it off depending on what you want, I don't like the gw model much anyway, take a peak at forge world for more inspiration.
If you want to give the model a missile launcher, then the havoc launcher components should do (again it depends on the look you want).
the key is the possessed in the battle force box. by mixing their parts in with your other models you make them all unique and "chaosy". even a Astarte marine will not be confused with just a few parts changes
