So I'm starting a new Word Bearers army (one I wish to be both fluffy AND competitive), one that focuses heavily on the whole possession deal. As such, I will have three Defilers, all Rhinos are possessed, and a crap load of lesser daemons to compliment CSMs. I have run into a bit of a conundrum however, so I thought I'd run it by you guys:
I want to use Possessed squads instead of Khorne Berzerkers, but I don't know if that will equate to shooting myself in the foot competitively.
Here's my comparisons:
-10 Khorne Berzerkers are a decent amount of points cheaper than Possessed, have Furious Charge, and a higher WS. They are also troop choices, and can therefore hold objectives. They also have pistols and the Champion can have a power fist.
-10 Possessed have an invulnerable save, a better S value, will 5 times out of 6 have a rule either equal or better than Furious Charge, and though more expensive, an IoK will give them the same amount of attacks.
So there are more pros for using KBs. However, KBs tend to be a priority target, and Possessed are not. Also, all my lesser daemons will negate the objective holding advantage, freeing up Possessed for straight killy. Possessed also have a better chance against MCs than KBs, as they have many more S 5 attacks (S 6 if they get Furious Charge), but KBs are better against vehicles due to meltabombs and the power fist.
So right now I'm taking advice and opinions as to whether or not Possessed are worth it.
I'm going to lean toward Khorne Berzerkers for a couple of reasons: A) They're scoring units. Like you said they are cheaper and C)Like you said you can turn them on vehicles with the powerfist. The Possessed are good but their unknown ability can make them somewhat of a loose cannon. That being said I've had tons of luck with penal legion regardless of random powers. Your best bet is to playtest both.
"LET'S COMMENCE PREPARATIONS FOR RUMBLING!" Mono-Tzeentch 1:1:1
Here's what you do: You run 10 Khorne Berserkers in one game and then 10 Possessed in another and see what was better. If you don't have those models or enough of the models, just proxy models in their place. You can find out for yourself which is better. I think you'll find that the Berserkers are much better; they can have plasma and the champion can have power weapon/ fist and plasma. Possessed don't and can only have power weapons 1/6th of the time.
My personal opinion of them, from playing against them, is that they are not an efficient use of points. I've not seen them used as a lesser daemon delivery platform, it would be a colourful looking army if nothing else.
I should add that i'm probably influenced by my last encounter - two 20-strong squads with champions and tzeentch icons, one rolling power weapons and the other furious charge. My opponent had, as usual, managed to take exactly the wrong army at the wrong time and had the power weapon marines ground down by a dreadnought (nothing else could get through the mob to help them out) while the furious chargers took a grandmaster retinue and a GK redeemer to the face - hello I3, WS2, doomed squad.
I always use berzerkers, the times that I have used possesed, i always seem to get scouts, which doesn't do a great lot for them. They can be quite good if you roll some options. They do look good, but if you are playing competitively, then I would choose berzerkers for their consistency, and customisation.
Something else, do possessed have grenades? They are something often overlooked, but can be very helpful.

its all about troops, possessed aren't and therefor can not capture points. Berserkers are, therefor berserkers are more useful.
The fact that you can not count on possessed to fulfill a role makes them not even an option, though their parts make excellent bits for making your troops.
Okay, most people seem to be in the berzerker camp, but I'll take the advice of play testing them. I have currently 6 troop choices in my 2000 pt army without them, so I think I'll be good with them not being troops. Hopefully they'll work for me.
IMHO, 6 troop choices for 2000pts is too many (unless some of them are daemons).
A rule of thumb that I stick by is 1 per 500 points, otherwise I find my army lacking in support, fire power or some other role (unless I'm using cult troops for most of it).
What are these units and how big are they? You may want some other units instead.
Sorry, typo, it's a 3000 pt list.
As for the meat of my list composition: Two of my troop choices are lesser daemons, groups of ten. The others are squads of ten CSM with IoCG, two will have flamer/heavy bolter combos, and depending on who I'm fighting, the other two will have either dual meltas or dual plasmas. The plasma and meltagun squads will be in Rhinos to close with and engage the enemy (aided by Berzerkers/Possessed), while the heavy bolter/flamers will sit on objectives and provide fire support. Heavy support will be a trio of Defilers with an extra DCCW each. All is led by my unmarked Lord with daemon weapon, and, if I have room with various upgrades, a winged sorcerer leading a Karmoon special of Terminators, probably with IoCG.
I would lean towards the berzerkers, they would give you another hard hitting troops unit. I know that I said 1 per 500 points, but with lesser daemons I make an exception, and take 1 more troops choice. Berzerkers are tough, like possessed, but hit a tonne of bricks harder, and can have a personal icon to help with summoning, and are more consistent and customisable.
If you like possessed, play test them a couple of times, but I know who I'd go for.
