i'll be making an addition to my army in the near future, and i am interested in suggestions to make my list more adept at dealing with more diverse armies. i specifically want to be sure i can handle nids and mech.
right now my list consists of:
chosen with plasma/melta
4 termies with combi weapons, PF, CF, HF, RAC
8 PM w/2 PG
bunch of CSM with some flamers
2 havoc squads
i was thinking of getting 5 jump infantry with 2 MG for an anti-tank zapper squad and maybe another defiler or some oblits.
what would really round out this list? i want to be able to effectively deal with hordes, MC's, and tanks.
I would like to suggest Noise Marines. From what I have seen on most fourms people don't like them as much as other troops but they work wonders against Hordes and MCs. Because they are Assault/Heavy 24" guns you don't have to get that close to an enemy like you do with CSM Bolter line or 1Ksons if you want to rapid fire. If you want to use them with a little anti-armor you can take the Blastmaster with them but it is quite point heavy but it's also pinning if you use it on troops. Plus they are fearless and I5 if they need to get into combat and they are scoreing.
that is an interesting suggestion. they might serve me better than bezerkers against nids. i'll have to think about that one.
is this list what you are using, or what you have. i mainly ask because first thing i notice is 3 hq, and only 2 troops. i assume you can make one or two troops selections out of CSM since you have chosen, havocs and unnumbered CSM. so you have troops and hq more than covered, you have one defiler, 2 oblits and 2 havoc squads.
i would get a 3rd oblit, and double up on defilers. as you move to 2000 points get a 4th rhino. Chosen with 4 melta's or plasma can be a strong elite choice(or 3 power weapons, and a fist for CC goodness) otherwise a few people think that a Dread is a strong choice to add more armor to your list, just have to be careful with placement.
Another defiler and oblit was precisely what I was leaning towards. I have a first edition dread, so I could dust it off.
HS is the only area where I thought my list was lacking. It is a shame that fast attack sucks.
I'm actually thinking of getting a dread from forgeworld. They are amazing looking. Since chaos struggles with long range anti-armor I was thinking of getting a MM and a DCCW. I'll be playtesting it tonight.

Unfortunately CSM Dreads blow. massively. They're unreliable and there's nothing they can do that something else can't do better (defiler springs to mind)
At a glance - I reckon you have a few squads of CSM - the troops are lacking. My IG hordes hate noise marines (v. Good) but I was thinking Melta gun Plague Marines - That high T and FNP give them a nasty edge vs hordes (nid swarms especially) and the meltas make them anti tank (to a extent. Don't forget that fist!)
It also helps towards the oh-so-annoying monstrous creatures.
Unfortunately you're dead right. Raptors are a seriously overpriced joke. (I have been tempted by them recently after seeing Tyranid Gargoyle wings used on a night lord themed army - it's in projects somewhere). however my wallet, and common sense agreed no.
Defilers do work well in pairs too (I was thinking posessed Vindicators, but 2x of one is better than one of each, and you have the defiler. Besides it's a cooler model)

Due to the advice of fellow gamers, my HS choices became 2 squads of Oblits and 1 vindi ... and I've never looked back.
The two~wounds Oblits last longer than a vehicle, and a vindi can do some serious damage before its finally destroyed.
I prefer squads of CSMs, including a plasma gun and a missile launcher. They can handle pretty much anything for their points.
Stay away from the FA section, as they're a joke compared to the rest of the codex.
Noise marines are rather good, and I'm currently trying to work them into my list on a permanent basis.
i like the defiler over the vindi for a couple of reasons:
more weapons (if the vindi loses 1 you are screwed)
better side armor
i think having 3 oblits and two defilers would fill in HS nicely. it fits the way i like to prosecute war.
also, i'm really leaning towards getting some of the dreads from forgeworld. they look awesome, and now that i see how to use fire frenzy to my advantage i actually think it will make them more dangerous to the opposition.
i want to get two.
one MM w/DCCW and TLLC w/ML
i think i will do the MM one as a worldeaters dread and the shooty dread will be black legion. that's some hella firepower for 230 points.
