So I used to collect Orks a few years back, I'm now getting back into the hobby and thinking buying the black reach box will help as I get more orks with it. The thing is... I don't like space marines but I do like the look of chaos and am thinking of converting the space marines into chaos marines. Whats the best way about doing this and what theme should i go for? I was thinking maybe Nurgle but I dont know a lot about chaos lore ect. Thanks...
Well, if you mean 40K you might check which forum you're in. If you're in Fantasy I just have to ask, what's a Marine?
Yep, this is 'Warriors of Chaos' for Fantasy- you know, the truest devotess of Chaos. If you're looking for the Chaos Space Marines, then you want to be in the 40k forum. I'll move this thread there now.
And for answering your question, the Black Reach guys have a couple of Aquilas (Imperial Eagles) that you're going to have to trim down, along with the usual Ultramarines propaganda. I trimmed a lot of the UM stuff off to make mine into a different chapter, but trying to get anywhere with the hero included in the box is just ridiculous- I didn't even bother.
As for a god to have them follow? I don't know the rules for the 40k gods, but you can always just pick one that appeals to you. If you go nurgle, buying some Greenstuff and making boils and guts and other gribblies should get you pointed in the right direction.
Alright. Now that the bashing is done, let's actually try to help you. (I just feel that that whole encounter could have been better dealt with.)
Anyway, Welcome! Always good to have people back. I'm also fairly new, but I'm totally pumped and consumed with the hobby. All I do is read, watch, and learn, so I hope that I can help. First things first: You NEED the codex. Before you even try to decide on a theme, buy the codex. Nurgle rocks, and I can understand your bias completely.
What I would do is read through everything that chaos has to offer. Then you can make your choice if you to theme your stuff, or not at all. For example, you may fall in love with one or more God. In that case, you'll want to mix your Nurgle-minded things with something else, which would mean a force like Black Legion. ( <---- Mixing is also gonna be more competitive, if you wanna go that direction.)
Read through the entire dex a few times. Decide what you like. After that, send me a message, or post a new thread about what theme you're looking for. But don't waste your hard earned money by purchasing stuff that you may or may not love after you see your other options!
Hope This Helps!
I agree with JKoby in that the Codex is important. But to get into the core of your questions, If you do get the Black Reach set you can just file off some of the imperial stuff or paint a big "X" of it, and use it that way. There are Chapters that fall to chaos all the time... although the impirium would tell you otherwise. You can make up your own chapter and have everything "Count As" Plague Marines if you wanted to. The box is a great deal and it is very doable to make it into a Chaos theme.

On a serious note though, as others have been saying, the codex is very important and when you get that you can start making plans and check out the lore and stories behind the chaos space marines. The current codex lacks a LOT of information though, so if you are interested in the background check Chaos Space Marine - Lexicanum and it all is linked from there...
Nurgle is a stable god to follow, you don't have to only buy units with him but plague marines are durable and effective for their cost. Since our codex has a few years and a new game edition behind it most things are terribly overpriced in there, but it's still competitive and you should be able to fix a good list from there.
Search the forum where we give advice to other people, there is much information to be had by reading those tips and tricks. And if there are still questions you have after that, just go ahead and ask them!
Welcome to the awesome forces of chaos! (except the forces of Slaanesh, they are fabulous!)

Black reach is a good place to start, I'm not sure how to do the character, but filing the heraldry off of the others (and maybe later mixing the squad with others) would give you useable models.
The terminators may require a few more bits, and for a useful unit, you probably won't want all fists, whilst some combi weapons would also be useful.
Dreadnoughts can be ok for chaos, but as they're unreliable, different people think differently of them. Adding a havoc launcher and some other bits to the black reach one would give you a good setup for one.
As arjuna said, a lot of the things in the codex are overpriced, but the troops are a major exception here, plague marines (a solid, defensive unit) and khorne berzerkers (some of the best assault orientated troop choices in the game) are well worth their points. Noise marines aren't bad, but you don't get as much for their points, and Thousand sons are also quite pricey.
Depending on which way you want your list to go, after black reach I'd advise a daemon prince for a very powerful hq, some plague marines as a survivable unit, and some berzerkers. You'll want a rhino for just about all of your troop choices, but go with the berzerkers first. Finally, obliterators and defilers are powerful heavy support.
Everyone will be able to give you more help if you can tell us more about what kind of army you want.
