Like the title says, is a "horde" of CSM any good? With horde I mean a full unit of 20 guys with a powerfist Champ, an icon and two special weapons just footslogging it along. I think it might be hilarious in a Dawn of War.
Anyone ever tried this?
Personally I never would because 2 squads of 10 is much more flexible, it may cost a bit more but I think that it would be worth it. It does however use up less troop slots and if I were to include any it would probably only be one squad to hold an objective. It would be quite fun to use but probably a bit of overkill in most situations.
GO for it.
You can only love your army till you build it and learn to conquer with it...I play an all deamons of khorne list at my gaming club and everyone looks at me like im retarded...but then when I drop three units of 6 bloodcrushers in front of all their chimeras and leman russ's and proceed to eat all of them with only the bloodcrushers.....and then in the turns to come I drop 2 bloodthirsters and 3 deamon princes on them...they start to look at me differently.
Basically many builds in this game can work and are viable..you just gotta make it work against all army lists, even the power gamers.
I suggest only using one horde of marines. Personally, if you do use this tactic make sure to flank the unit with lesser squads of marines. Like 1 unit of 20 and 2 units of ten. Then include in the list your flavor of deamon princes, add in a unit or 2 of havocs...Im starting to see a huge use in them again over the defilers because if you are playing a horde army you want as many wounds on the table and no mech at all, and you want the long range ability to counteract speed freak armys so you can blast their vehicles away from you so you dont have to try and chase them down.
If you are interested in a list I would try something around
The only time I have really done it was with an all foot list. A couple weeks ago I ran a squad of 17 Berzerkers with Abbadon and a Lash Sorc. It worked out really well, but then again the game was against Nids. But I would not do it in most other games.
I heard that a player used close to 100 khorne berzerkers on foot and kharn in the ard boyz last year and finished in the top 3 of the first round.
I don't like the fact that you have to move 20 models on foot and have to cross the board to do something. But if I ever do it, that horde is going to be fearless for sure so probably khorne berzerkers, 16 strong with a powerfist champ. Lash would really help get the horde in combat faster, so would also need a lot of long range tank busting to be sure lash has something to do.

They can be fun, especially with berzerkers, I'd rarely take more than one, sometimes they're seen as a huge threat, sometimes not.
On the overkill note, with such a large squad you can often get into multiple assaults, to balance this out.
