So the last tournament at my FLGS was at 750 and was won by orks. I heard he just horded the crap out of everyone and overrun them. I had to miss it, but now I'm concerned about facing him at the next tournament. It's at 1850. I've never played against orks or even seen them played. What should i expect and what threats do they pose? I know that they are cheap and tough, but not very strong. What kind of anti-armor do they bring. I am considering using a land raider in my list, but frankly i just don't know what approach to take. against meq army and teq armies i am solid, but here i need some help.
I love the smell of promethium in the morning.
If he is bringing horde, he will have a LOT of boyz, but he won't, in any list really, carry much in the way of anti-tank.
I really need to focus on a single army...
Orkz: 3000 pts. Slaaneshi Chaos: 2500 pts. Ultramarines: 1250 pts. Necrons: 1000 pts.
Eldar: 1000 pts. Tau: 1000 pts. Dark Angels: 550 pts. Grey Knights: 450 pts
There are a lot of ork builds.
-The horde is around 200 orks and a little support, soemtimes no vehicules and sometimes a few. A few khorne berzerkers or CSM with mark of khorne win you this game by themselves.
-The Nob Bikers is 1-2 units of 5-8 nobs with bikes and FNP all equiped differently for wound allocation shenigans. Each 5man unit is around 400 points without the warboss. This can be part of the list or the list itself.
-Kan Wall is 9 killer cans, 1 deff dread, 1-2 battlewagons, 3-4 trucks full of orks, 1-2 units of warbuggies, 1-2 big mek with custom force field. This is a really bad matchup for chaos, we need a lot of shooting to stop it and we usually can't field enough.
-The battlewagon list, 5-8 battlewagons with deffrollas. This kind of list usually rushs your lines and renders all your tanks useless the turn it hits you, 1d6 Str 10 per battlewagon + ram dommage makes a lot of dead tanks and then he unloads all his boyz in close combat.
Most lists are a combination of the above but these are the extremes they can do.
If he has grotskink in his army he can outflank and choose the table edge he wants to come in from with this unit even the back table edge , this unit can also "carry" an atached independant caracter.

"Iron Within, Iron Without"
I play Orks quite a bit, and never have had all that much trouble against a horde. Some of the other meta-lists Black Rose mentioned can be tricky, but hordes get chewed up by Berserkers, Defilers, DPs, and other standards of Chaos lists.
My son is a big Ork player as is my best bud so here's some words of wisdom: Boyz hate template weapons: flamers, ordnance even plasma. Therefore use Defiler and Vindicator. Nobz hate Plasma cannons and Lascannons. Lascannons are instant death against these two wound models. Therefore Obiliterators are your best friend against them. Never let them charge you, always charge them. Even if this means you adjust your own movement to make this happen. Without furious charge, Orks are easier to kill. Also, Orks tend not to be mobile without their rides. So I like to bust the Trukks early to allow some more shooting before the Ork horde reaches your ranks. This is especially true of Ghazkull Thraka who is Slow and Purposeful. Hope this helps.
Also I would have an eye out for Lootas. They may have a low BS but a squad of 10 has the ability to put out 30 Str7 shots, and I have lost many defilers to them in the past. Also Burna Boys in a truck/battle wagon, as they can lay down 1 template x how many boys are in the squad, so you can look at your squad of 10 CSM get 80+ hits on them from 1 shooting phase from 1 squad. And if they don't shoot with the flamer... then you have to face their attacks that ignore your armor save.
As has been said, at higher point games a normal army can win through for you, it's only at low points that you need to worry. dreads and kans can be a pain, but with fists and meltas you can usually stop them, key point made so far, is get the charge, the last thing you want is their nobz striking simultaneously at S5, A5.
