I've noticed on all the chaos army lists that everyone outfits theirs CSM squads like regular Space Marines, ie. all bolters/bp+ccw with some special or heavy weapons. Why doesn't anyone mix the two? For example, a 12-man squad carrying 5 bolters, 5 bp+ccw, a plasma gun and a missile launcher. Has anyone tried this before?
because they don't work.
if you mix weaponry in a squad you have a squad that can do a little bit of two things bot none of them properly.
A squad with Bolters and Heavy weapons is a fire support option. This squad will stand back and shoot (a no brainer really).
A squad with Bolt Pistols and Close Combat weapons and a tooled up Aspiring Chapion is a close combat option. This squad will be on the move and might even have a rhino as a transport to get into hth quickly.
I you mix weapons within a squad you will end up with wasted points 50 % of the time. If you stand and shoot the hth guys points are wasted. if you move the shooty guys points are wasted.
And yes I have tried something similar with a SM veteran squad. They don't work. Concentrate on one role.
Shut up and play.
Lamenter is right, imo. While it might look good on paper, in practice you would be decreasing the troops' effectiveness.
On the other hand, if you're watching points, I think it's okay to mix weapons of the same type, e.g. sonic blasters and bolt pistols.
The above reasons are great advice for not mixing and matching, but if you aren't convinced then try this trick in your next game. Make 2 (5) man squads one with your plasma gun and rocket launcher and the other with ccws and bolt pistols. Stand them right next to each other at the begining of the game. Try to use them as one unit (move the same direction/fire at the same target/etc.; obviously don't treat them as one unit because that is illegal). Remember even though your bolt pistols can't fire as far as that rocket launcher you have to shoot at the same target it does! I'll bet you that by your 2nd turn you will have these units operating within their specialty parameters and no longer moving together to try to half-ass accomplish a goal.
I was just thinking that now since bolter squads are more mobile now, thanks to being able to rapid fire even after moving, that they're also more vulnerable to getting assaulted, so having some chainswords in the squad would give them a better chance. Also, the ability to mix is something Chaos has but SM doesn't, so couldn't that be taken advantage of somehow?
Apart from the above reasons why i don't take any mixed squads, the reason i take one 9-man squad: 1 aspiring champ and 7 marines with bolt pistols + ccs, 1 with a melta gun and one 10 man bolter+plasma gun squad, is because I can't be bothered to count up the attacks for close combat! i just want to say, well they all have 2 attacks, or 3.
FROM THE BOOK OF THE IMPERIUM:

2. Thou shalt not flirt with Howling Banshees. They are the enemy.
3. Thou shalt not refer to Battle Sisters as Bolter Biatches
4. Darth Vader isn’t the son of Abaddon
5. Thou shalt not reassemble a Necron into a washing machine
They're Marines for god's sake they don't need a couple extra boltpistols/swords to fight off an attack, and the unit that charges them is most likely to take a hefty load of bolter shots the turn before

I'm with ya on that one, besides, once the squad disembark or fire those bolter, model armed with BP and CCW can't do anything, so you'v wastedthan about 8 more shots. They're Marines for god's sake they don't need a couple extra boltpistols/swords to fight off an attack, and the unit that charges them is most likely to take a hefty load of bolter shots the turn before
I've tried mixed squads before and they just don't work half as effectively as if they all have the same kind of weapon. Mainly because they're not great at cc & they're not great at shooting either! Trust me it just don't work.

Lamenter had the best advice. Mixing weapons is nothing but a waste of points, squads should be tooled out for a particular role.
