Ok, I'm a bit puzzles how bikers work with their choice of bolt pistol or chainsword. Now, with a bolt pistol, they an additional ranged attack, and because it's a pistol they can use it in CC (if I'm remembering the rules correctly). So, what's the benefit of giving them a chainsword instead? I thought a model needed to wield TWO weapons to get an additional attack in close combat. I'd appreciate someone clearing this up for me.
Thats a very good point, when putting my army to paper i immediately decided on the pistol for that reason. For a w.e army though they have access to some other weaponry, so i think they could have a plasma pistol or khornate chain axe as a close combat weapon which would certainly come in handy both having merits. However that does not answer the question in its entirety so someone else will have to add to this. I could also be completely wrong.
A Chaos Space Marine Biker have the the choice to take either a CC weapon or a bolt pistol. You should see this only as another CC weapon to add another attack to your profile. The additionnal attack comes from the bike and the spike and blades it have, that's where the +1 attack comes from. So basically since you have a CC weapon and a spike covered bike you get 2 base attack.
As for the bolt pistol, Since an infantry model can only shoot one weapon at once, if ever you shoot with your bolt pistol then you won't be able to shoot with your combi-bolter or the weapon mounted on the bike. Of course you could always choose to fire your bolt pistol instead of the weapon mounted on the bike, but that would be losing some fire power.
If your bikers wear the mark of Khorne then they can exchange their bolt pistol for a plasma pistol or a chainaxe. The chainaxe would be better a much better choice than a plasma pistol tho, putting a plasma pistol on a biker is not worth it since you will probably never fire with it the mounted weapon being always better. If ever you want a plasma weapon then put a plasma gun as your mounted weapon, since you can have 3 special weapons in a squad that's where I would put the points.
So if bikers can only fire one ranged weapon per turn, what's the point of carrying a bolt pistol then? Why even have that option if it's so obviously better to take a CC weapon instead?
The point is that its a CC weapon and you have the choice to take it instead of a CC weapon. You can shoot with it if you choose to, a S4 AP 5 shot up to 12" and you can't reroll if you miss the first time.Originally posted by Oneiros@Dec 28 2004, 146

Take the one you like best, the one you want to see modelled on your biker. There is no obvious advantage for a Chaos Space Marine Biker if he take one or the other. Its a CC weapon and take it as such, there is no shooting advantage in taking a bolt pistol over a CC weapon.
The obvious advantage you seem to be looking for is given to a CSM squad that want to have 2 cc weapons but retain some shooting abilities. They are the ones that profit from taking a bolt pistol. Tactical squads come to mind.
I would think that the weapons on a bike can only be fired in the front arc. However, I would think that a rider with a pistol could fire it in any direction just like an infantry unit.
Thats the type of rule that goes with Warhammer Fantasy Bronco.
