I did a search and did not find what I was looking for so I thought I would try posting it here. Well I have think I have decided that my next army will be chaos, specifically I think I am going to go with Khorne, I need a CC army bad since I play Necrons and IG currently.
Now I know I need the Codex but, as the titles says would either box set be a good starter (the battle force or mega battle force) for a World Eaters army or is there a lot of wasted units in there?.
Would I be better off buying a box of Beserkers and Bloodletters to start?
Which HQ do you guys recommend to start? DP or Bloodthirster?
Ooh.. Khorny khorne.
I'd recommend not buying the boxed sets. You can't take regular marines in a world eaters army (well, unless you choose not to use the world eaters variant army list, which is quite feasable,) so, unless you were going for the slightly cheaper but not as interesting looking option of painting regular chaos marines in World Eater colours and pretending they're berskerers, you'll have a lot of useless stuff.
Don't bother with the DP or the Bloodthirster for now. They're very powerful, but both pricey.. just use the leader of one of your berserker squads as a lord or lieutenant.
After that.. Maybe bloodletters, I've been told they're amazingly cool if they ever get into CC. One thing I think a world eaters army must have is some heavy support to provide the tankbusting ability your squads don't have, maybe a predator or a dreadnought with a lascannon or similar anti-tank weapon?
I thought the standard box set would work for WE because of the bikes, beserkers, and rhino to get me into CC. The mega set doesn't really fit, not enough beserkers, I thought it came with 12 not 8.
I was also looking into a World Bearers army, I know they use alot of deamons but would the box set be better suited for them?
Both the WE and WB are something I am interested in I just want something with alot of CC punch since both my current armies are shooty based.
Indeed.. the bikes, berserkers and rhino are all good choices for a world eaters army. However, I'd only go for the box if it would be cheaper than buying these things seperately, because you won't need the regular marines (they'd be good for paint-testing though, or as a bit of fun.)
Now, with Word Bearers we invert the situation. Word bearers can't use khorne beserkers, so the beserkers you get in the box wouldn't be very useful, but they can use regular 'unmarked' chaos space marines.
It's about weighing up the cost of the various components, and asking yourself whether it would be cheaper to buy them individually, or to get the box and get rid of the stuff you don't need.
Personally, I think Word Bearers would be the more fun army.. There's more to them than just running forward into CC.
Well thanks for the feedback. I guess I will get the codex tomorrow that might help me make up my mind. I want an army that has alot of CC options but I guess it doesn't HAVE to entirely be CC based army. WE just sounds like alot of fun, but I know lots of people play them, I assume there are less who play WB.
What you could do is use the marines you get in the box set as Possessed. So that way everything in the box can be Khorne.
Thats a good idea looks like the box set might be a good start after all!!Originally posted by Tony@Feb 10 2005, 21:22

Woo.. Didn't think of that one.
In that case, definately go for it if you decide to do World Eaters.
Yes, I think few people play Word Bearers than World Eaters. The problem I find with world eaters is that A. you'll be out of control a lot of the time due to your troops wanting to charge around manically, and B. you'll have very little ranged ability besides vehicles.
That said, World Eaters Possessed sound like a hideous prospect for anyone to face. :/
Word bearers get some funky undivided units which the cult armies don't get, like raptors and obliterators, as well as the extra-troops (which can be used fluffily for demons or twinked out to give you loads of CSM squads.) Since all demons besides horrors/flamers are CC based, you should have a decent balance towards close combat, but you'll still be able to fight at range when the situation demands.
I know there are a lot of people who swear by khorne stuff though, so don't just take my advice.
I personally love Word Bearers for the above mentioned, I've recently come back to 40k from a fantasy departure and am starting one. The fact of having religous zealots unleashing daemon packs on enemies is great.
Plus I like the converting oppurtunities.
Here I am, Rock you like a Hurricane.
