I'm starting a Chaos cc oriented army, but I'm not sure if I want to play a pure World Eaters army, or an army like the Black Legion with pretty much all units taking the Mark of Khorne, but still have the accessibility of other units, such as raptors.
The only disadvantage I see to playing a non-WE army is that I won't get the free aspiring champion upgrade for berserker units of 8, but I'll gain access to units like raptors, havocs, etc -- models that can't take the Mark of Khorne. The main reason I'm asking is while I can see the massive close combat potential for a WE army, I'm concerned about some of their anti-armor capabilities. I'll just make a list of questions to make it easier for anyone who feels like helping.
1) For a WE army, the main anti-armor will come from your HQ, Aspiring Champs with powerfists, and possibly a predator, or are there other options I'm missing?
2) Is the benefit of a WE army worth giving up the units that can't take the Mark of Khorne, or is it more of a fluff-type decision?
3) Currently, I'm thinking of creating a Black Legion company with a Khorne daemon prince HQ, made mostly of Khorne units, with some others (such as raptors or havocs) to fill duties like anti-armor and fire support while the berserkers close in.
Any advice about how WE armies generally play out would help, or how undivided forces generally play, would help. Thanks!
I have had a lot of experience with world eaters and all ive got to say is this.
What looks good on paper isnt always good on the tabletop.
World eaters have HUGE hidden drawbacks that you dont even realise.
Although i never lost a game with them, i think that a black legion army would be much more effective.
1. No raptors
2. No havocs
3. No transport (although this isnt restricted, its not reccomended)
4. VERY inaffecive against AV models (impossible to kill)
5. VERY high points cost, and theyre still just as easy to kill.
6. No infiltrate (i have an alpha legion pure infiltration army, VERY effective)
So you have lots of 20 point berzerkers all on foot. The chances that they will make it into combat without getting killed is quite small. You will find that your lord and other faster units will make it into combat instead.
When i made my WE army, i thought it was unbeatable (although it did go unbeaten).
But i dont see how i won though because everything was strength 4, a strength 5 lord, and 1 plasma pistol.

Thanks for the tips...I think I'll probably be playing Black Legion with a Khorne emphasis...painting the power armor in the color of the Legion, but leaving the helms in Khorne colors...
I understand you've made your choice, but I just want to say this.
If you want a tactical, versatile army, choose Black Legion,
If you want a fun, different and challenging army, take WE - I have a WE with no firepower, but I don't care - that's not what WE are about!

Inquisitor Lord Mercurius & co. W0 D0 L1
Well if you have forgot you could have a daemon prince as a anti armour model
monsterous creature = dead armour = you happy
i apologize for being negative but i dislike WE. basically you charge at the enemy and hope to get them into cc and destroy them there. it's not much in the way of strategy and its not very rewarding.
the black legion is a lot of fun because they're unpredictable. you can give them most units and they're really powerful. just remember that normal marines, when given a mark of chaos then become an elites choice unless they are led by a general with the same mark.
I shall destroy all who stand in my way. The Emperor shall be reborn in me, the Primarchs shall be remade in me. I shall cast down the Dark Gods, the Star Gods shall be consumed just as they consumed their brothers. Those who fell shall be redeemed, those who remained pure shall be rewarded. The Imperium shall regain its power and the Dark Age of Technology will seem like nothing. For I am the Numen and I am coming
I would have to agree. I wouldn't say Vanilla Chaos is unpredictable, just requires more (some) tactical thought, through playing and army list composition. WE doesn't need to think about either of these, because it is so blunt and one-sided there isn't really much variation you can have, save for improving your uber-lord of killing everything.
