all out combat slaanesh?
all out shooting slaanesh?
a little mixture of both?
im planning on making an emperors children army, and when i think about it ive never played one in all my years of 40k'in and wondered what they are better at as they seem to be good at both but im not sure which path to follow...
I would go with both, with a slight edge to shooting. Their biggest advantage over other marines in combat is that they'll reduce the enemy's initiative by 1, but other than that, they're pretty much standard (don't get me wrong -- it's huge -- but it's not like a Khornate chainaxe w/3 attacks on each model).
I love sonic weaponry though. The sheer volume of firepower that squads can fire, when either standing or on the move, is crazy. Horde armies will go down fast -- EC may be the best anti-horde army. A 10 man squad of EC marines could fire 20 shots on the move or 30 shots when standing, all out to 24" -- against many horde armies, facing 5+ or 6+ saves and T3 -- which would result in 8 wounds when moving or 13 wounds when standing. On average, that's about an entire IG squad per turn, or 1/3 of a full termagant squad.
Additionally, Warp Scream allows for some pretty nasty CC lords. Because they'll strike before most other HQs, they'll have a decent chance for inflicting some nasty damage.
I'm playing Black Legion now, but my EC Havoc Squad makes me wonder if maybe I should've played EC... Good luck with your army!
I would actully go mixed with a slight leaning towards cc. The reason is simply Demonets they can rip though enemy armies with ease and doom sirens make slaanesh cc units rather more powerfull than the -1 initative suggests. Slaanesh can make some pretty powerful cc demon princes as well both with and without stature my favourite is the lord with combat drugs, dark blade, demonic strength, demonic mutation, doom siren, sppiky bits and demonic aura. This guy can take down a hive tyrant in combat (actualy our resedent tyranids player says it is unbalanced). I would include soem shooty units to help thin the lines of the enemy. Another hint is to give your entire army infultrate.
EC is geared around having a delicate balance. There are many aspects that favour shooting; Infantry with sonic weapons, vehicles such as dreads with the amazing blastmaster etc., and the CC elements as well- HQ w/ or w/out escort, possessed, and daemons. Personally I think the slaaneshi daemons are gthe best of all the daemons for what you get for the points, and I love the keeper of secrets. As Sithlet said, Lords can be tooled up to rediculously high levels, if you wanted to be really cheesy you can build your lord up to S10 without giving him a powerfist- meaning he still strikes at I5 (in addition to warp scream).
That said, Slaaneshi armies have some of the best, most versatile weaponry in the game. The Blastmaster is simply incredible, and can function as both Anti armour and anti light infantry as well (not to mention the great look on Lordofchange's face when his thousand sons get smashed with an S8 blast marker). Sonic blasters are one of the best nti-horde weapons in the game, as they have a huge rate of fire and are quite cheap, which given that EC marines are quite expensive to start with, you don't have to shell out loads to points and make yourself even more outnumbered.
