I'm trying to start a Chaos army, and after careful deliberation, I've narrowed it down to Alpha Legion and Night Lords. while I do like Night Lords, they are a bit expensive (Raptors) per model (point wise), and it seems quite a few people play them. So I'm leaning towards Alpha Legion.
Right now, I like the Alpha Legion Fluff, the cultists, and the way they play mind tricks on others. I also like the fact that they have both expensive and cheap units for very flexible use. while playing WH40K is mostly for fun, I do want to have a somewhat decent winning percentage, so my question is this:
I've searched the forums and read everything there is about Alpha Legion (not much to begin with), and realized that all the posts were pre-4th edition. So with the 4th edition in now, can people tell me if the Alpha Legion has a balanced chance of winning compared to other Chaos armies overall? If you can point out armies that it's good against and bad against, that would help too.
As long as the army isn't flawed by 4th ed like the Orks are, I think I'll go with the AL, if I can find some cheaper cultist models. =)
Even in 4th any army has a chance. I deliberated on it as well, it was either them or slaneesh but I just dont want to play sm of any kind right now. It all depends on how you want to build it, do you want shooty or cc oriented. Or balanced?
I'm thinking more assault, since my other army is Necrons and that's more shooty. The reason I didn't go for Khorne is I want a "semi-balanced" asault oriented army. I like flexibility, especially with Necrons as my other army (not much flex there). So I plan on having 1 tact squad as the fire support, along with oblits, but the rest will all have CC weapons, pistols, flamers and meltas. Most will have furious charge too.
Just wanted to get a "feel" for the army... I know every army has a chance to win in the hands of a good player, but some are tougher than others, like Dark Eldar and Orks in 4th ed.
well sounds like you might enjoy slaneesh. If you take their mark they become fearless and any model in b2b is at -1 for int. On top of that they have very unique weapons for both cc and range.
Hrm, I guess I'll give them a check. I've only looked at Tzeench, Khorne, and Nurgle so far... didn't really have much interest in Slaneesh before, but I guess I'm using Daemonettes in my Alpha Legion army so I should look at them.
The thing is, from the old posts it seems Alpha Legion is the least used army... I think that would make my army a bit more unique and harder to predict... I kinda like that aspect of it... :p
Remember alpha legion can't use daemonettes unless they include cultists.
Slannesh is an interesting army (I would say that because I play it.) If you plan on doing it, don't do what a lot of people (myself included) did and go 'oooh.. those sonic weapons are amazing, I'll get whole squads of them.'
Number 1.. They're really expensive in £.
Number 2.. They're not actually that great when one considers their cost.
I'm not saying they don't work. But keep them balanced.
I think alpha legion are a great and very underplayed force. I wouldn't worry too much about the 4th edition, as really not much has changed which would affect the AL specificially.
But the choice is yours.
Many thanks. I just looked over Slaneesh and didn't find anything that interested me superbly. The sonic weapons are cool, but cost a bit per model, so that gets rid of my "cheap" requirements in terms of points.
I think I'll go with the Alpha legion, since it's underplayed, many people won't know what to do with them. =)
stealth adept skill - amazing - soooo worth it - 0-1 raptors not applying is pretty sweet too
go 2 squads of raptors 1 squad of bikes with a champ who has a personal icon - and drop furies in the opponents lap for just fast attack- thats not 2 bad- 1 heavy support - just take 3 obliterators plus ur heavy support and ur good.
havocs with tank hunters and stealth adept is killer

Alpha legion can have an entire army of infiltrators  ...that seems very useful.....
Yes, the entire army can infiltrate... I've pretty much decided on them as I bitz ordered 40 cult models from Necromunda and Mordheim today for $250 (with weapon bits and stuff)... ouch! But it'll be worth it to see 120 attacks on the charge with 40 cultists someday... all INFILTRATING =)
Raptors sound amazing, but way too expensive... I kinda want a good mix of expensive models (CSM) and cheap ones (cultists)...
