I've been thinking about having 2 or even 3 defilers on my battle field. Its for a wordbearers army and i know what your thinking, its a bit much. But even one is amazingly awesome. So give me your thoughts on how many defilers would be needed for say a 2000 point battle.
I would say no more than 2. Don't forget to give them indirect fire and/or mutated hull or they'll die quick.
dont be so positive about them.i have one and whenever i use it,its gone in the 1st turn, its to big and flashy for my likings, but if they work for you than great but i wouldnt take 3 thats just to many!!1 or 2 should do the job butt not 3 its to expensive with what i think are compulsary upgrades(indirect fire, mutated hull)
INNOCENCE IS NOT IMMUNITY
Once you add indirect fire and mutated hull the points do mount up, and if you're going to fill your 3 Heavy slots you might want to have some variety. Yes, 3 pie lates would be nice, but what if you don't hit properly? If the hole in the centre of the template isn't over the vehicle the weapon strenght is halved. Not very useful. A Predator with full lascannons is about the same points and under these circumstances would be more more reliable. It's all down to how well you can balance the rest of the army as to whether you can justify 3 Defilers.
I would say yes ife your playing horde armies like orks, nids, eldar and definitly give it mutated hull if your facing Space or imperial gurads id say fit in a Predetor defeiler and defieler with lascannons. Do what you wanna do, but if you do this youre taking the main slot of Anti-tanks .
im kind of extremely lucky and i prefer tactics on the unstable side so i'll probably go for 2 defilers for starters
I personally don't like the defiler, because they are the target number one of your enemy (most times) and quite big, so easy to hit...I personally prefer the points in havocs ( and predator ) in cover.
But if you think about taking two or three I would suggest 3 and a lot of CC to defnd them at all cost. With three of them you will force your opponent to come to you, if he doesn't, just sitt and make big holes in the table...and three will be enough to resist some 2 or 3 landspeeder etc..
And of course you would have the bennefit of surprise ( at the cost of 3* 40 $ )
No more than 1. Especially for WB. You guys are more CC oriented, and the daemons are very effective at taking out infantry already. Get a few preds to snipe some tanks.
Hyperion and Iron Warrior are right. All that CC power WB gets from daemons is not really going to like being pie plated. Yes, one would be god, not as brilliant as you seem to put across but still worthwhile, more that one kinda makes it seem as though you'd rather be playing Iron Warriors instead.
Defilers are a must for shooty Chaos Armies, but they're most effective against horde armies or CC Space marine Armies.
The only problem I see with indirect fire is, with the 36" min range, most horde armies will get too close before you can fire more than 1 or 2 shots off... and if they spread out good enough, you'll kill at most 60-100 pts with the indirect fire... after that you'll have to do direct fire, and by then, it could scatter into your own troops if you're not careful...
Thus I'm really not sure if having more than 1 defiler is a good idea... as for myself, I play Alpha Legion, so I infiltrate like crazy. Defiler is a bad idea if my troops are everywhere on the board... =)
