right, I have never done well with plasma guns in my death gaurd army. in fact today, I tryed putting plasma guns in my army. all but one died the first shot they fired, and that one was killed after taking a second shot. also, i have tryed plasma before, and my gunners never survived the game. I was wondering if plasma was too much of a risk, or if i am just incredably unlucky.
why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly
You are just unlucky. I also have had similar experiences. But as a chaos player, anything random that yields a chance of death is greatly welcomed.
I think plasma is too dangerous to be put in the hands of any army, but only when concerning the man-portable rifles or pistols. Plasma Cannons in vehicles have no problem with overheating. Not to mention the fact that they have a nice little blast radius that can put the hurt on anyone. The Demolisher and Vanquisher variant being good examples of vehicles that benefit.
Just unlucky. Plasma guns are well worth the risk. I would never consider not using them in my army.
Maybe i'm just really lucky, but I've never had a guy die to overheat. I would always take a plasma gun in my normal squads of marines, they are far better than any of the other choices. besides, with a 3+ armor save, your guys are not going to die very often.
I've lost maybe 2-4 guys over 5 games or so. In marine armies, plasma is easily worth the risk, in my opinion. There's only a 1/18 chance for your guy to die with a cannon or single shot rifle (a 1 followed by a failed armor save) or 1/9 for a double tapped rifle (1 or 2 followed by failed armor save). And when you consider the death plasma can pour out...
Last game with my Dark Angels army, I had a squad of terminators droppod next to a full unit of Grey Knights and a 5-man stormtrooper squad with plasma. The stromtrooper squad took the first round of firing, because I feared the plasma much more than GK squad.
Single plasma shot can take out 40+ point terminators, 2+ save HQs, low-AV vehicles... can easily inflict wounds on MCs and such...so if you ask me, yes, it's easily worth it. If you couldn't make an armor save, well...no, they probaly wouldn't be -- but since you can and marine armor is so durable, I say yes.
With 5+ save armies like IG and such, it's more debatable -- you don't care about the loss of a 6 point trooper, but the loss of a 15-20 point gun is something to be upset about. Still, though, I'd never be without at least some plasma in an army that could take it.
