Making the shift from the greater good (boo hiss) to the true faithful's side of this intergalactic battle.
I am tempted by two of the forces of Chaos' chapters.
Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion
.....Lots of Obliterator cult models. Can take up to 9 and i love the models / rules for these guys
.....Great chaos lord options with the daemonic options
.....Can trade fast for heavy
.....no daemons (i like these too)
.....one troop choice option
.....Access to all types of daemons
.....Can still take an obliterator squad
.....3 types of core troops
.....Vetran skills for all cultists.
.....Lots more to paint with access to cultists
.....LasPistols on cultists
Can you help me decide?
it really depends on your strategy. If you go for the Iron Warriors then you'll have a really heavy hitting, tough army but be restricted in terms of movement. If you go for the Alpha Legion then you'll have a sneaky army but cultists are worse (in my opinion) than the Imperial Guard troops. I personally would go with the IW but it's your choice.
I shall destroy all who stand in my way. The Emperor shall be reborn in me, the Primarchs shall be remade in me. I shall cast down the Dark Gods, the Star Gods shall be consumed just as they consumed their brothers. Those who fell shall be redeemed, those who remained pure shall be rewarded. The Imperium shall regain its power and the Dark Age of Technology will seem like nothing. For I am the Numen and I am coming
Both these armies are underplayed in my opinion. It's nice to see someone wants to play them instead of just another khorne army. As stated it depends on your strategy. Which is more you? Overwhelming fire power or sneaky cc with cultist meat shields. Personally I like IW better. I played a small IW army and enjoyed the experience. But it shouldn't be completely shooting. You should have massive firepower but still have something (bikes work great) to counter-charge and protect those vulnerable siege weapons. The craziest IW army i've seen had 2 basilisks, a defiler, a predator, 9 oblits, 3 troop squads, a bike squad, and a lord. (200pts) It was really really nasty. But ultimatley the choice is yours.
I think the Basalisk is a 0-1 choice for the IW. I have played IW for a while, they really are flexible enough to assault with, but in smaller numbers than usual. Typically I have seen people use: HQ: Lord with Kai gun + thug crew; Elite 3x single Oblit.; Troops 4x 8man squads in Rhinos; Heavy: Basalisk, Predator, (Maybe Defiler), Havocs in Rhino (or two squads if no Defiler). The defiler has a great indirect battle cannon, but it is kinda fragile. I prefer the Defiler for use against nids, Orks and Tau. Add a few upgrades to the vehicles (mutated hull and such), and you have a great 2,000pt army. I use raptors on rare occassion to throw people off.
*Fart* "Keep talking sir, we'll find you!"
I say Alpha Legion.
I have gotten a lot of **** for being an IW player, mostly due to the kids that play them nowadays, and the general lack of strategy in most IW armies.
AL on the other had would be fun to play mostly.
i dont really see how they're underplayed..honestly, i think the armies people say are underplayed are overplayed now, because i havent seen a Khorne army in ages, and everyones playing Alpha Legion or Night Lords, and then i route the poor sons of *****es...
but, to the topic, go for the IW they're just so cool, regardless of who plays them or not, I'm starting up a LatD army of them, and the mutants are gonna be slightly converted Necrons ^_^ bwahahahaha....
Wait, so can Lost and Damned take Legion-specific Units? If so, does that mean I can use my allies as Alpha Legion and take Cultists?

Maybe that's how it is in your area. But I just see way to many khorne and WE armies in my area. It's all down to the local. I haven't been to an official tourny in a while so I can't speak nationally.
I must add to numberofthebeast... all I see are Khorne, Black Legion, Iron Warriors, and Emp champ armies for Chaos... VERY few Word Bearers and Alpha legion, which is why I chose Alpha Legion. I still haven't met ONE person at any tournament in the local area (or even looking at some bigger RTT roster lists) of people that play Alpha Legion...
Funny how quite a few new to Chaos folks are thinking about them... All I can say is, they are GREAT! =) Cultists are wonderful cheap cannon fodders (that can pack a punch if charging), infiltrate is sneaky as heck, and the choice of having any deamon (except for fast attack ones and Nurglings) is also very useful.
IW is quite overplayed in my area and from many forums I heard they're overplayed in general and often get called "cheesy"... just wanted to warn you of that.
