Ahoy me fellow chums. I be collecting LatD and modeling them with a piratical theme. They comprise not just of humans, but of Freebootaz, Kroot Mercenaries, and anybody else with an appreciation of adventure and booty.
Here's what I've decided on:
Captain Bikke (notice where the name's from): Heavily armed and armored, Bikke rides into battle atop a gigantic treasure chest carried by four of his trusty honor guard. This chest is an inspiring sight to all near him as he single-handedly fells his foes with his trusty Hrud Warp-plasma pistol and Warp Cutlass. The chest contains many a cursed treasure which radiates an aura that that means for all purposes he's a Daemon Prince. He's treated as a Word Bearer Dark Apostale Demagogue with Essence, Rune, Toughness (he's durable), armed w/ a Plasma Pistol and Dark Blade.
Aspiring Champions: These are the first mates of my command, armed with a variety of pirate weaponry.
Gunners: Many former Guardsmen were faced with the prospect of joining or walking the airlock. Given such stark contrast, and lured by promises of gold and glory, they joined Bikke. They're the AT team, infiltrating and blowing enemy landlubbers to smithereens with rockets and grenades.
Sentinels: They're a maverick unit for recon and treasure-hunting purposes. Armed with cutting lasers jury-rigged to function as multi-lasers, they also boast advanced sensory equipment so they can pinpoint where exactly is the X that marks the spot.
Hellhound: I want one, just for the coolness factor of having a ranged flamethrower. It also proves fun whenever the pirates have steak night (about once a month) and need some way to make their food well-done.
Kroot Snipers: Kroot are mercenaries and go where there's gold. Several of them will be included to use for suppression purposes.
Anyway, here's what I need help with.
Names: Currently, I have Warp Privateers, Pyro Pirates, Scurvy of the Galaxy, Slipgate Scalawags, and the Void Vagabonds. I can't decide, so if anybody gives input (new names, opinion, etc.) that would be great.
Ork Freebootaz: I was thinking of using Mutants for toughness, but then they have none of the trademark items like Choppas. Choppas are replicated through Khornate Chainaxes, but Khorne Berzerkers have too many rules (blood frenzy) and I want to have at least one Flamer-type Burna.
Defiler: I want a Defiler for my army of course. But I don't like the model so I am using an elaborate proxy. I want to create what looks like a giant walker version of a Pirate, which I'll call the Robo-Dutchman (arrgh!). The problem is what model would be a good baseline to start conversion from? Any Transformer/Gundam is fine, as long as there is a head big enough for me to model an eyepatch and pirate hat.
Marine Allies: They seem inappropriate, but I want some transported units that don't require fast attack? Pirate Honor Guard? Or Beetle-warriors of Barbary (the flamer units being gourmands that eat chili peppers and burp?).
OK, any response? I'm dumping the Word Bearers and allying with Alpha Legion, and using Cultists as allies.
Sounds like an interesting army. Maybe you should post it in the army fluff section tho. Let's see some pics of this pirate army.
Hmm...better learn how to upload pics. What's really fun is the Hellhound (a converted Leman Russ that had the gun turret cut off and replaced with a hack-sawed heavy flamer with a wire leading to the fuel), which uses a keg o' rum as it's fuel source. But what I need to know is what do I use for my Defiler-turned giant Pirate? Any brands recommended?
Got the "Defiler." It's a 1/55 walker from the Mechwarrior: Dark Ages series, which I am going to model extensively, spray paint, then post photos of. Combining this with the two Sentinels is going to be fun as a Pirate "attack formation."
