Ok im new to this site but i read through most of the postings and u seem to really know a lot of helpful things. I played a simple khorne army in the old version and have the newest book and am starting a big campain agansit Blood Angles, Eldar and Sisters. we are starting out at 1000 and moveing up per turn 2 5000 and i really like the heavy and tank options for iron but i played under Khorne for a long time and it just does not feel right without the Bloodthirster on my field making the enemy shake in fear
so any help would be nice
Iron warriors are vastly different, in the idea that they are sit and shoot. Bringing a bassy to fire vs sisters/eldar is a thing of beauty, and shooting up blood angels is fun too.
You can have 2 havok squads + A dread + a Bassilisk...Thats pretty nice imo. Bomb the hell out of troublesome formations and then let your bolters and plasma do the talking. I lean towards the fiery plasma death route when dealing with my IW's, but others have different opinions.
Vs Blood angels I'd quickly swap out the bassy for a vindicator...You wanna make a run at my lines? You eat 20 plasma shots a turn and then what's left gets a ap2 str10 pieplate dropped on them for getting too close.
You can't bring deamons, which is ofcourse the downside. The main CC power of some factions is the fact they can summon bloodletters to slam stuff down.
As Rook said, IW are much more specialised, preffering to blast the crap out of anything that wants to run at them at the cost of versatility. Black Legion can field everything so you can customise your army so that it tailor-made to your preferences and playing style. However, if your style is to nuke everything in sight then Iron Warriors would be more your thing.
Iron warrior means no 0-1 limit on obliterators. You also get a hell of a lot of heavy support including new tanks. Finally your commander can have a cool chaos servo arm. I almost got IW, but instead I got Black legion. Though I'm not saying that you should. The reason I got them was because I love the look of the bloodthirster. Also, black legion have access to everything and can even unite world eaters, thousand sons, emperors children and death watch in the same force. It's up to you to decide whether you want loads of tanks or a more varied selection of chaos space marines. I myself am going to collect a small IW army based on Christian of the UK white dwarf team.
"DICE FOR THE DICE GOD!"
And the almighty Dice God said to his followers "Thou shalt not speak ye words "anything but a one" For thou whoever'st speaketh this blasphemy will be cursed with thy rolls being of one".
I suggest Black Legion because if your more used to cc then they would be better. BL are more versatile and can field anything and everything. IW are very good but if your playing style is to be all up in your opponents face then IW are not for you. You can have a shooty, assaulty, or balanced BL list. What is your playing style? Let us know and maybe post a list in the "army list section" and we can give you more help.
Personally, I don't like black legion - i think that they're really a "jack-of-all-trades" army, and as the saying goes master of none - i believe in black legion, there are several weaknesses to be exploited, whereas with iron warriors you can simply have the obvious weakness of mobility and CC ability, that can be quite easily solved by a squad of CC marine or a daemon prince. I think that a well-played iron warriors army could easily beat any black legion army, just for the fact that as the iron warriors pound one weakness and open that up into a larger weakness. I also think IW paint scheme is about a million times better than black legion.
The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people are awesome and can kick your ass.
"War does not determine who is right - only who is left."
I play IW and i have noticed that yet i used to lack movement and close combat power it can be easiely solver by a cheap cc squad of 8 chaos marine with ether 2 meltas or 2 flamers, add a chapion with a power fist and u got your self the solution. The fact is that you dont need much cc power at all because of the fire power of squads of 8, but its nice to put your cc squad infront of them to protect them. Remember thought, if u get a cc squad this doesn;t mean u rush it up the field as u would do with krone. Just put them in some cover infront of ur firing squads and u have a nasty surprise for the incoming enemy. The reason why im saying incoming is because IW make any army come to them and if they can't they die from bassy or defiler or both. As long as u set up a smart defence line with a bunch of squads that fire and one or two close combat ones u will kill alot of them quick. To give yourself some movement power just get a rhino or land raider and put a squad with ur hq and get a preditor with autocannon and heavy bolters. This will let u move and destroy while ur oridance vehicle pounds their line that is charging you. And this is all possible due to the wonderfull ability of feilding 4 heavy support units in one army. And i haven;t even mentioned the power of a few obliterators.
