yeah, i'm getting started in this hobby, and i need some help, i emailed the people at the local shop (i joined their web thing) and its late, so i dont expect a reply anytime soon, so i'm gonna ask u guys, and so far, i'm up to this; What should i buy first, apart from a box of Chaos Space Marines of course? if it helps, i've never played a game before, and budget-wise, i have about $100 towards this right now, and 5 marines already assembled
HELP PLEASE!!!! thanks for any and all help
First thing your going to want is the codex...
After that, you'll want to select what kinda chaos player you want to be...
Khorne (VERY cc oriented)
Slanesh (Good in CC, very strong ranged)
Tzeneech (Expensive, lots of wounds)
Black Legion : Vanilla..little bit of everything
Iron Warriors : Sit and shoot, blasty army
Word Bearers : Plenty o Deamons
Alpha Legion : Infiltration
NightLords : raptors, fast attackers
Once you figure that out, alot of things become easier and we can help you better.
well, i read through the codex almost religiously, and i've skimmed the main rule book (i dont think i could read that all in one sitting) and i'm still not sure, what would you suggest for a new player?
All really depends on your style.
Honestly I'd suggest (if you want to go cult army) you go with Slaneshi marines.
They are good in CC (read : Very good)
They are amazing in ranged (assault bolters basically)
Have Deamonettes (rending...Ever see a 15 point unit rip open a land raider?)
Over all they are quite good. They are a close 2nd to Khorne in CC (Cept you don't need to always make a b-line to the enemy) and at a range they can really lay down the punishment.
A DP with a dread axe and combat drugs is an evil thing, as the enemy will have -1 to their init when he attacks (Eg :He will attack before them alot of the time. A squad of stealers can even be surpassed in init with combat drugs and warp)..Add in Furious charge and you have an amazingly mean CC unit. Init 7, str 8 (if you take d.str) t6.....Thats a pretty bad ass unit, no?
Alpha legion is good if you prefer to have a nice body mass of meat and you like to move right up on the enemy.
6 PSM's with Talons (inf/furious charge)
2 squads of 20 cultists (assassins)
2 Squads of Plasma toting marines (10 strong a peice, 2 plas per squad)
2x Dev squads with 3 ml's a peice
1x Squad of Raptors
Is the general basis for getting up close and personal with the enemy. Your ML's end their armour rather quickly (as you have no armour of your own to really bring with you), The PSM's get upclose and rip stuff up...The cultists are a threat due to just volume of fire//wall of meat ...The marines dump fire into what ever squads appropriate and you wait for a good opertunity to deep strike your raptors (if your against guard, 3 raptors with flamers are pretty badass...Vs Marines take 3 melta guns then charge!)
Personally I like to proxy this Alpha legion when I get bored :
+Aspiring with tele homer
+Aspiring with tele homer
-Marker and with a standard
Fast attack :
Comes to 991, everything pivots on something as lowly and fragile as a cultist....It's fun.
Since everything infiltrates, simply find their juiciest targets (generally their armour) and You now have 6 str8 shots into their tank or what ever...After the hard targets have been removed (You're still in cover, so even their plasma is only so effective)..Next turn you DS your terminator squad, Summon furies (send them to attack heavy wepons teams)...Fire missiles..etc. You are now down with your cultists. Their use has expired....Thusly send them head long into a pack of what ever you happen to want them to die to.
Basically I just look for excuses to use terminators, so this was a good one.
Swap out Furies//Marks on the cultists/ and you have enough to purchase an infiltrating 5marine group that has 2 melta guns and CC wepons....
Ofcourse if your termies never show up, your cultists get wasted right off the bat or your ML's never do much...You could spend the game removing cultists from the board and throwing them at your opponent.
For a new player I would suggest Black Legion. Or at least an army using the black legion rules. That way you will be able to try out all different units before deciding to specialize your army or not. You can try out the different daemons, marked units, unmarked units. And to do this I'd get the Chaos Space Marine Megaforce. If you can't come up with another $40 then at least the Chaos Space Marine Battleforce. But im gonna let you in on an even cheaper way. Go to the GW website and find out the units in the megaforce and then just go on ebay! lol On ebay you can get a ton of guys for relatively cheap. I'd try to get all the units in the megaforce and maybe another tactical squad or raptors or a marked unit (plague marines/noise marines) if you prefer. But remember putting them all together and painting them is the #1 reason (that I see) people quit the hobby. They get lazy. At least put them together and play em' while simultaneously painting them at your leisure.
i think i'll go w/ markofthebeast's idea and start w/ black legion rules, and i think i will buy that megaforce thing, but i dont have a credit card or the means to buy stuff online, so i have to deal w/ the more expensive, face-to-face thing (filthy humans ) and i bought a Kharn the Betrayer to use as a lord, which is good because i'll have 12 korne marines, i think, so i'll be able to use him, though i am converting him a bit, if i ever get the chance, i'll get a pic of him
Black legion is not always so great as a starting point, my first army was a black legion one at the same age as you and as I progressed to a better understanding of the game I realised while they seemed a good idea at the time I was really craving a more specialised army. So even though many of the members may well not like me for this, since you already have Kharn the Betrayer as a chaos lord, and if you like the models of the Berzerkers I would suggest a Khorne army. They are fairly simple to play for a new player like yourself and you could get more berzerkers for your $. Something that may help however is what sort of dollars are you talking about?

74. Thy shalt not tip the Terminators over during battle.
This is why it's a good thing to start with the Black Legion, it helps you understand all the things you can do with a Chaos Space Marine army, you are able to take an experienced decision later on and specialise yourself with a specific legion of your choice.Originally Posted by SPACMARINE
I personaly recommend beginning with the Black Legion too, that's what I did, then I went to the Iron Warriors legion and I'm not currently a Death Guard Army player that go back to Black Legion and the Iron Warriors (or a mix of those) once in while. That's the beauty of a CSM army, it's so diverse.
The megaforce is a great way to start by the way, good choice.
Try watching a few games look at what models have nice abilities and look sweet most people don't mind u wacthing as long as u keep question nice. think of it as u are a lord what do u want to do blow them a way at rang and wait for the bodies to stop smoking before looking for serviors or do u want to rush up and see the look on the enemies as u spill their insides on the ground and watch them break and run when they see their lords heart in ur hand and the blood still dripping of ur armour. if u say all shooting IRON or maybe Tzeentch. All hand 2 hand Khorne then if its 50/50 or 70/30 thats whats left just check it out and i don't know if this will get me in trouble but ask around at the shop/shops ssee if anyone is selling a prebuilt army for cheap u can find some people willing to sell it for less than half and can rebuild repaint and resell anything u need to and if u get something u never use or don't want some people will trade or buy for the right price but one thing i can tell u. you started down the right path by choosing chaos
