I've been re-organizing my Iron Warriors list and have been giving some thought to the Chaos Predator. I, for one, seldom use one. I mainly stick to the Defiler, Bassy, and Vindicator as i play Iron Warriors. Whenever I swap one out I immediately bring in my Dreadnaught, Korvax. However, I've begun use more rhino's and took a glimpse at my predator and thought when have i used this?
So what do you think? Are chaos players more drawn to the Dreadnaughts and Defilers, reverting to the landraider for tank support and havocs for fire support? Or do you find the Predator not as useful comparted to the other options out there?

For my army I equip the pred with all lascannon weapons to make it an anti-tank tank. I think its ok.
Maybe it's just you. I see preds quite often. Especially in marked armies that need the extra armor. Generally I'd rather take a dread. But I find a pred more useful than a defiler in some situations. I wouldn't get all lascannons though. I prefer mobility and actually being able to move and fire.
If I am forced into making a single Heavy choice it will always be a Predator. My armies lack long-range anti-tank support, and the Predator makes up for that beautifully. And it's effects are well felt, as well, as all of my friends universally target my Predator as they know how much of a threat it is. And, because of Mutated Hull, it's incredibly hard to kill at long range.
Dreadnaughts are nice, but they fall pretty easily, and they get too close to melta-guns in my opinion. Defilers are good, but I am finding ordinance a bit too random as of late. My shots are not hitting as much as they should. And Land Raiders are a straight-up waste of points.

Chaos Marines (3000)
I don't agree that LRs are a waste of points at all. I use them in my 1K Sons army and am quite happy with them. I've seen them used in IW armies as a transport for Chosen retinues as they do not count as a heavy weapon that way - yep, four oblits, bassie, vindicator, defiler, dread and LR - could be called cheesy?
I think a lot depends on what your army composition is.
I like LR's in my opponents army. Then my tank hunting havok squad can blow it up with S10 lascannons, or at least stop it from moving to blow it up next turn. 250pts down the drain. Never had it last longer than that...
The only heavy support I'd go for in Chaos is pred, dread, and havoks.

I always taked my predator for my thousand sons - it adds some heavy support that the thousand sons surely lack. I give mine 3 lascannons and mutated hull, along with extra armour - as i struggle to make sure my enemy can fire nine times out of ten at the front armour of fourteen - this tends to mean my predator does an awful lot of damage. Also, the three shots mean squads like terminators, chosen or even basic CSM can have a big bite out of them without having to worry about saves.
The only difference between tattooed people and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people are awesome and can kick your ass.

I take my predator with twin-linked lascannons and heavy bolters, but I'm considering swapping them for an autocannon with lascannon sponsons. Three lascannons is appealing, but an autocannon leaves it more versatile as it has more shots but high enough strength to go for large numbers and heavy troops alike. That was the original plan when I took the heavy bolter sponsons but I find them too weak when I come up against armoured enemies such as Marines, despite the very generous rate of fire. It's the only offensive vehicle I have, although I'm considering a Forge World EC dread when I get round to finding a job and get some money in. As for upgrading it, mutated hull makes it the ideal defensive vehicle, especially if you can put it as far forward as possible to deny the enemy decent deployment space (we play mainly cleanse missions on 4' sq. tables). Extra armour is a must for every vehicle (as I've probably mentioned before).
I play a very highly mobile IW army so Predator's are very important to me, equipped with HB sponson they can move over the field and claim area's while laying down supressing fire in support of other units.
