I'm going up against a smurf army in 2 weeks and I was looking for advice.
its going to be a 1500 battle, he is known for feilding A LOT of marines, and the store uses lots of terrain.
my normal lord is as follows-
i was thinking of using him like this-
the first one is a cc monster buuut this guy i'm playing uses a lot of marines. so i'm thinking that the Ether Lance, being a flame template that wounds on 4+ with no armor save for the marines aaaand being assault i can still charge in with 5 power weapon attacks with furious charge.....should be nasty.
i just have to use available cover, hope his higher toughness holds, and he doesn't ask why his gun looks like a reaper autocannon and a brighlance put together. :-D
So long as you have a few other bikers to go with him, he should do fine. Ether Lance is a nice touch, and he still has enough power weapon attacks to go round once he gets to the choppy. So long as he can make it close in one piece he'll be fine.
Because you've heared him towards killing marines (and quite blantantly too, with that ether lance) he's going to be a priority target. Also, the rest of your army composition would be very helpful so we can see what else you plan to do to take down your opponent.
he's going with 4 normal bikers w/2 meltas, and a champ w/ a power fist, all have furious charge.Originally Posted by monsieurcartier

-both havok squads have 4 plasma guns
-one squad of csm's have bolters and 2 plasma guns
-the other csm squad has ccw's and 2 melta guns.
The marine killer seems fine. Just use cover like you said and turbo-boost if it looks like he's gonna be in too much trouble. He'll be safe in cc, with his squad so just get there as fast as you can.
I like the lord with the Ether lance, I'd probably give the Bikers flamers instead of melta guns. I've found that the meltas 1 shot vs marines doesn't compare to the flamers. However, if you going tank hunting also, then the meltas work nicely.

If there is enough marines about then flamers would be better- you're only going to get one kill with a meltagun, even though you're pretty much certain to claim that kill. A flamer is much better at large numbers even if they're well armoured numbers, even a horde of marines doesn't like a flamer template (especially if it's a wind of chaos template; 7 ultramarines and their chaplain in one shot ) and with two you can be well capable of taking down 4+ marines if you can catch enough of them- remember the 'partials' rule doesn't apply to a flamer, you're either hit or you aren't. If you can still fire rapid fire weapons and charge with bikes give them plasma guns- I'm unsure if you can do this, and seeing as nobody has suggested it I guess not.
I'd say go with the flying lord - I prefer them to biker lords, and it's more night lord's fluffy. Just give him daemonic mutation, spiky bits or master-crafted(or both, if you're feeling horrible) and daemonic strength. That way he'll get to charge on the first turn if he infiltrates behind cover, he'll be striking first against marines with 6 attacks that hit on 3s with at least one re-roll, and then wounding on 2s with re-rolls. You'll most likely be eating 5 marines a turn with this. If you give him daemonic visage, all the better - they'll be taking leadership tests at -2 leadership, and -1 if they're below half strength - that's leadership 6 with a sergeant, 5 without!
