Well, as I was looking through my EoT codex, I noticed that mutants can be given guns called firearms for free. Firearms have a '24 range and are basically heavy stubbers that you can move and fire with. The downside, of course, is that they can get hot(like plasma). So, im wondering: is it worth it to use firearms?
I think it most definitely is. There is no cost and no penalty. Its like if you could give Eldar guardians Preferred Enemy: Eldar for free with no penalties. Most likely it will never be used, but there is the slight chance it could come in handy, and you got an instant advantage for nothing!

Gets Hot isn't a penalty? SWEET! (I feel I should point out that there's a ton of sarcasm in that line)Originally Posted by Baratos

Firearms are nothing like Heavy Stubbers. They're Bolters that Get Hot. I guarantee that you will kill more mutants in a round of shooting that any enemy models. I also guarantee that you will loose more points from your Mutants dying than from any enemy model.
Beasts of Chaos (4000)
Chaos Marines (3000)
Umm... they are like heavy stubbers.(statwise)
And about the Gets Hot rule- So what? Theres onley a %16 percent chance of one getting hot (firing normlly) Big deal if a few muties die! I also think it's a very good bargain- you still have the same number of attacks, but shooting abilities as well!
A better description of the Firearm is an Ork Shoota that gets hot.
Since Mutants to my understanding are mainly assault troops, they'll most of the time only get to blast off their guns once before assault. Because of the combination of rapid fire and gets hot, more Mutants than enemies will surely fall to the ground, except when firing at Grots.
'Course, there's no reason not to take the Firearms since they're free, and they might just come in handy in some desperate situations.
Firearms are pretty good if you take enough of them. But I would always take a unit of plague zombies over a unit with firearms.

Do you have uber micro...????
I'd say it's worth it. You're getting them for F-R-E-E!
You don't have to shoot with them, but you have them if you need 'em. Best to come prepared!
Clarification: Fire Arms are kroot rifles that get hot. They are not heavy stubbers (in S and Ap they are), they are rapid fire. Big difference to heavy 3. Gets Hot! rule is when you roll on the to hit table the number of shots you are fireing you take an armour save, if you fail that you take a wound. Gets Hot! is Not Good!, its not sweet. You'd be better off giving them all las-pistols IMHO. Free is not always good.
Well the thing with fireamrs is that you need quite alot to a decent effect (have you ever seen a shoota boys army?) and the Get's hot isn't too bad with a 4+ save. I can picture 3-4 units of 30 mutants blasting away firearms and heavy stubbers like there is no tomorrow, and this can be a fearsome sight indeed.
They are only worth to bother with in massive numbers IMO.
