I was planning to go for either the Nurgle or Iron Warriors... but I need help deciding which is best against the usual SM armys? Or is there any other Chaos army that is better suited to defeat SM armys? I've heard alot of good things about the Nurgles of all the Chaos armies... then I see the Iron Warriors that are able to field the Bask and the Vindicator... Help?
Nurgle and Iron Warriors are quite different. Nurgle units can take alot of punishment but lack heavy weapons in there squads. Yet iron warriors are all shotting with big guns, yet this gives you a big disadvantige in the counter-assault field if you don't make give yourself some good sqaud choices. Besides the Bask and Vindicator, Iron Warriors dont have a cap on there Obliterators, this gives you great elites. Also the iron warriors can have an extra heavy support by dropping 2 fast attack choises. On the other hand Nurgle can use strong deamons yet iron warriors can't feild deamons at all.Originally Posted by Devoltionist
Personally i would suggest Iron Warriors, not because i play them but because they have the weaponry to give you the ability to kill space marines quickly with the heavy weapons. But if you do go with this choice make sure to have some strong counter assault squads of infantry and your HQ choices. If you go in the Iron warrior dirrection, I would suggest getting 2 troops squads. Maybe one iron warrior kit so you will have a lascannon and a regular choas kit to build a close combat squad, you will also get a melta wich you can give the close combat squad to make sure they have a chance at the terminators. After 2 troop squads are done get an HQ and ether an obliterator or a heavy support of your choice. This depends on the games you are going to play and the money you have availible.
"Iron within, iron without."
Bah, if your looking for the best CC army, Khorne (Word Eats) is ya man.
Best fast strike force are the Night lords.
Nurgle is good when coupled with other armies, thats about it.
Iron Warriors are long distant pansy, like the eldar, except they don't have any great CC. Squad of Raptors are a must. Iron Warrior Raptors... mhmm cool paint scheme on those guys.
If you're dead set on one of your original two choices, then take Nurgle. But the best way to go against space marines is a Khorne-heavy Black Legion army. Just slap a mark on your lord and load up on the berzerkers, and you still get to use oblits! Maybe even stick a nurgle squad or two in there for good measure. Anyway, that's just my two cents. If you're a purist, I suppose you should go with world eaters.
Going with this guy's suggestion as my army. Purist armies don't strike my fancy.Originally Posted by yourhumblecartoonist
Any of the Chaos armies can be tailored to beat SMs, seeing as they can match and raise any skills the Space Marines have. The only things Marines have over Chaos Marines are land speeders, Multi Meltas, and Razorbacks.
You should pick whichever Chaos legion looks the most fun to you, do a test game with proxies to see how they work, and see if you like them. Personally, I like the Emperor's Children for their versatility and their fearsome close combat and shooting mix. Its hard to say which legion really is best against Marines in general, as their are many different chapters, and now a new trait system as well.
Now though each of the legions plays differently, they can all adapt to fighting Space Marines by taking plasma guns, Defilers, Possessed Marines, Raptors etc. Most of the Chaos Marine units will outmatch their Marine counterparts, but sometimes cost more as well. The key to making good Chaos lists is finding the right balance of playing to your armies strengths without putting all your points in one thing and ending up badly outnumbered and outgunned.

i do think both are equaly as good.
nurgle- they are harder to kill from cc and bolter fire. nurgle's rot can kill a few in marines for barely any points. furious charge and a manreaper will mow a squad of marines in 2 turns.
iron warriors- vinditators and basilisks with their large template, low AP weapons. 2 havok squads infiltrating with 4 plasma guns is a sure fire marine killer. the amount of heavy weapons is quite scary.
as to madeling, iron warriors leave you more options in the future. where as nurgle is nurgle no matter who you play as.
Yup Kalayst is right. Nurgle in general are just tough. Iron Warriors can employ more vehicles and more of those awesome Obliterators. Go with the Warriors if you are going to be Purist.

Deathguard can take lots of punishment and they pack enough melta and plasma to kill SM's pretty easily, trouble is though, you have to get up close and personal, which can be a bit tricky.
Iron Warriors should be able to kill SM's at a distance, considering that you can pack 4 ordnance blasts into the army, not to mention the 9 obliterators.
A Wordbearers army with tons of Bloodletters would be a good SM killer too, although summoning can be a bit unrealiable.
I have to say that against Space Marines, Either World Eaters, or Emperors Children would be best.
WE kills them great in h2h.
EC kills them great in shooting.
There once was a Lord named Vlad,
Who's fighting skillz really were mad.
He killed and he maimed,
He spilled blood in Khorne's name.
And the fact that he's legal makes me glad
