Couldn't work out where to put this, but since it's not a strict army list I figured it could go here. Basically, I want to start out on a completely new DG army, and since I was on a limited budget. I have a HQ and two squads of 6 Death Guard as models. Obviously my next step is to get to Nurgle's favoured number (7) and get my free Aspiring Champion. Since I can't splurge all at once, and want to keep playing games with friends, what should I get next? I'm figuring a dreadnought, just to keep those tanks away since my basic squads can't have heavy weps in them. I'd like a shooty army with lots of infantry, so I'm going to be picking up 2-3 more squads of DG marines along the way. What would you guys recommend?
Blood for the Blood God!
Skulls for the Skull Throne!

A dreadnought is probably a good idea.
Maybe a defiler, or perhaps a terminator squad. they can pack a punch.
If you're aiming for a shooty army you might find it a little hard to get alot of heavy weapons in. Unless you intend on spraying the enemy with hails of bolter fire, which is always fun.
But otherwise a dread is probably the best way to go in small(ish) games, due to most peoples lack of anti tank weaponry. And it can still help you in combat as well.

I'm just starting a death guard army myself and have two squads of 7 with HQ and about 40 plaguebearers (got em in an auction for cheap). My next addition is going to be a Dreadnought with lascannon - I have an old SM model i'm hoping to convert to nurgley goodness.
I plan to add a squad of Terms after that, if the dice are with you, terms can soak a ton of damage and reaper autocannons aren't all that bad. Don't forget your chain fists!
A defilier with twin linked lascannons is ok too - but i'm on a budget too and am trying to avoid being to spendy (mmm... twin-linked). Heck, if you don't opt for the indirect fire option the defilier doesn't even cost that much more than a dreadnought. The cannon and monstrous size come in handy vs. landraiders as well.
I think I'm in the same boat as you gents. I'm getting started, and I've made the classical error of "buying what looks cool without thought to cohesion." So, that means I have a metric buttload (and trust me, that's a lot) of minis to get painted. This, of course, is without any idea of what works in a combat situation. Luckily, thanks to a few users here and my local Rogue Trader, I've finally started filling out the right options.
Incoming: More Death Guard troops. Anyone want a squad of 14? Me, that's who.
Well for Death Guard to be shooty might be abit tricky.
Defilers are good and so too can be death guards devs with those special weapons.
Terminator can be good yes and will fit in nicely if you want to create a shooty army as they can move up and pump their weapons.
Right on - that's the first thing I did with my Khorne army after 1000 pts. were established - squads of 16. Hmm, perhaps I shall do the same with my deathguard.Originally Posted by AnimeNathan
More marines are always handy, keep in mind you can just get the plastic chaos marines and do a bit of converting if you want some more variation in troops.
In terms of heavy support, a dread with twin lascannons, an autocannon and sponson lascannon pred, or a defiler are all decent options. Though to me the whole point of a taking a defiler is to use the battle cannon.
You could also look into picking up some blisters of plague marines with special weapons, or scrounging up plasmagun and meltagun bits for your plague marine squads or if you want to do the more expensive option pointwise you could a 4 special weapon havoc squad. Killing yourself with rapid firing plasma weapons is half the fun.
