I am fairly new to the game (been playing for approx. 1 month) and have so far played an army that is primairly Khorne. Now with a few battles under my belt I have decided to stray away from Khorne and would like to play a Black Legion army. My question is what units/marks of chaos work good together? Right now these are the things that I have.
1 unit of 5 termies>Khorne
1 unit of 6 possesed>Khorne
1 unit of 2 oblits
1 unit of 6 chaos marines
2 units of 6 KhorneZerkers>Khorne
1 unit of 3 bikers>Khorne
1 unit of 5 havocs
I was thinking
Termies>Slaanesh or Tzeentch
Just looking for some ideas. Please help if you can.
Possessed can work well with either Slaannesh or even just Undivided. Khorne will still work fine, too. Undivided has the benefit of curbing the cost per model on them, which is handy if you're getting a pricier gift.
Termies, depends what you want to do with them. If you plan to add a lot of psychic powers then sure, Tzeentch. Slaanesh is handy for the Initiative, as well as a gift in it's armory that keeps enemies in combat (since termies can't sweep them anyway).
Havocs, I would stick with Undivided, or whatever you give you main HQ. Remember, they're Chaos Marines, so if you give them a mark different from your main HQ choice, then they move into an elite spot. However, Slaanesh can also work if you want a unit with several Blastmasters in there.
Normal marines, basically the same as Havocs. Maybe a special squad of berserkers or the like if you've got an Elite slot to spare.

Xar is wrong however, depending on the mark your DP takes, it changes the status of units with the same mark or different. Berzerkers are troops if the DP is Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeetnch are Elite. Slannesh can not be taken. This should be found on page 38-39.
I was planning on making my HQ Abaddon the Despoiler and he has the mark of Chaos Ascendant. Does this change the elite rule?

Any units defined as "Chaos Space Marines" are affected by the rule that makes them elite. Havocs, troop squads, bikers, chosen... all are Chaos Space Marines. Chosen happen to be elite already, and so are not affected. Raptors are undivided only in the first place, so they always stay as Fast Attack (to clarify, MoCU does not make units elite, it just prevents specific cult bonuses for other dieties).
At least, that's the concensus interpretation. the rule itself isn't quite as specific and clear, and could be interpretted as just applying to the Troop option called "Chaos Space Marines".
hmm i was of the understanding that a Black Legion list had to be led by a HQ bearing the mark Undivided...
Maybe my interpreation of the rules are incorrect or rather I may have made a (poor) assumption.
Could someone please enlighten me
Black Legion can be lead by someone with a mark other then Undivided. But doing so restricts you from including one or two of the other marks in your army. It's explained who restricts what in the start of the Books of Chaos I believe.Originally Posted by WrxAnt
Basically you're not a pure cult army, you're just a specialised Black Legion.
So one can assume then if I took a HQ with MoK then my Khorne Berserkers will be troop types vs Elites when using MoU.
That small oversight of mine makes me army list a lot easier to work with now...
Yes, if you HQ (the one that counts as general) has MoK, then your Berzerkers will count as troops. If your HQ has a different mark, then they count as elites.Originally Posted by WrxAnt
