My friend has gotten bored with his Alpha Legion and after I explained what a daemon bomb was he seemed interested. I know that daemon bombs are only really effective with bloodletters or daemonettes.
However my friend wants to use BOTH bloodletters and daemonettes. Now that means he can't collect a cult army so he won't get the summoning bonus but he really wants to use both demons.
I just want to know if this is effective without the summoning bonus. Can daemonettes and bloodletters work together? Also if not which is better for the bomb, daemonettes or bloodletters?
This is a basic outline of his army.
Lt. /w infiltrate, personal icon, MoCU and some cheap weaponry.
3 bikes /w MoCU
5 bikes +1 champ /w MoCU, 2 meltaguns, champ /w personal icon
As many daemons as his points allow. 50/50 daemonettes and bloodletters.
It can work, but it will never be as effective as a cult army daemon bomb. Also, Furies and Flesh Hounds are viable alternatives to Daemonettes and Bloodletters. The reason you don't see them often is that they take up Fast Attack choices, but they work great with Infiltrating units.
He'll need to beef up the size of his biker squads. Three won't cut it - five is pushing it. I wouldn't do anything less than two groups of six. But without the summoning bonus, you're relying a bit too much on luck.
For instance, with six full daemon choices, you can expect to see three units on turn two. In a cult army, you get roughly the same chance with only four units. (2.6 units will appear, to be exact.)
My main concern is that he's bored of his army - I can all but promise you that daemon bomb armies are extremely boring to play after a few games.
They're also extremely boring to play against. And not that difficult to defeat.
What's a effective and interesting way to use a daemon bomb then? How about using them to augment an infiltrating, fast-moving force (rather than use an infiltrating, fast-moving army as a means to drop a daemon bomb.) Would they work reasonably well as a means to provide counter assault punch to a somewhat static shooty army? Inquiring fools want to know.
One more thing to consider is the choice of Legion. If he plays Alpha Legion he'll need some cultists to summon from as the Marines are just not able to do it.
A change would make him pay more for infiltrate but allow him to have infiltrating Chosen with that special "Daemon Icon", this will ensure a rapid summoning.
Choice of Legion is exactly what i'm getting at. He has his own legion called the Knights Illusions and he wants to make them into a daemon bomb army.
Now Black Legion could work because it would allow him to field both bloodletters and daemonettes. World Eaters or Emperors Children would also work for the summoning bonus. I don't know if Word Bearers would work but they're meant to be the daemon army.
He could use the Word Bearer list, your losing out on the summoning bonus, but with all the troop choices possible you could be looking at plenty of daemons really. The bikes would take fast attack, leaving daemons for compulsory troop. Hq could be a Lt on bike or apostle.

I love deamons and use Flamers and Bloodletters constantly. I have to caution that investing too heavily in deamons can leave you relying on summoning rolls too much. One game you may get all deamons at the right time, other games you might have your key squad not show until turn 4 or 5. I've always found that deamons can add flavor and power to a chaos army, but there are pluses and minuses to the summoning rules. As such I might recomend that he tries adding a unit of deamons to his Alpha legion first (assuming he uses cultists) and see how they work for him.
forgive my ignorance what is a daemon bomb (i mean appart from a great inclean one after 7 curries)
