im usually not a fan of ordanence but i've decided to try some out anyway, i am using iron warriors and i've come across 2 similar ordanance tanks and im not sure which i should get.
Basalisk only has a ws of 3 and weak armour but a longer range and a stronger cannon and is also cheaper in points
Defiler has a better weapon skill but costs more points
the way i see it the is what ever i choose it will soak up heaps of fire power and may not last very long so wouldnt the idea is to kill as much as possible quickly there for wouldnt the defiler be better seeing how it has more chance of hitting? or am i missing somthing?
i havnt had much experience with ordenence tanks so if som1 could tell me a few things it would be great
Sure Defilers would be a better choice if they cost 100pts but the thing to look at is that the Bas is much cheaper pts-wise. Generally you'll want to keep it out of sight and away from fire anyway.
The Defiler is also much larger and more difficult to hide away.
On the other hand you could just field both! IW players can rely on CSM and Obs for anti-tank anyway but only the Defiler and Bas let you drop Ord. If you really want to keep them safe by some Preds to put in front .
i already got the preditor. but if i do that little trick all it takes is a good deepstrike and i lost 2 tanks. the ws of the basilisk still doesnt look to good to me.
defiler all da way buddy

i've heard alchohol makes you stupid!
No i'm . . . doesn't
Using Indirect Fire doesn't take ballistic skill into account. You guess range, place a marker, then roll for scatter. That's it. No ballistic skill impact whatsoever.
What exactly is the talk about WS? A basilisk doesn't even have a ws...
Anyway, I'd get a Basilisk with indirect fire. Cheaper, easier to hide, more powerful, and simply the fact that you can. Besides, basilisks look rather good when you put spikes on em.
Ze titles yez...
When in doubt,

i guess you should really ask what you need it for and what use it will have in your army? I have a defiler because i really liked the model. thing i thought of is do i really want my ordiance gun to be able to have a reaper autocannon and possibly a havoc launcher/ heavy flamer? yea its nice for your gun to be able to fight back, but for the cost do you want to use it? if i had a basilisk, i know my defiler would be spending a little time on the shelf.
here another thought to: defiler is 175 (mine has havoc launcher) 150 without....would you rather have a basilisk and a obliterator? basically a mobile weapon platform and a ordinance....just my two cents.
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
sorry BID i ment BS. thanx for the input everyone probably get the basalisk, and if that screws me up then i'll get the defiler.
I'm a big fan of the defiler, but i built mine using the IW conversion kit offered back in teh troll, so its not nearly as big and bulky as the boxed one, + it looks more IWish and isn't seen much at all. Pain in the ass to build, but hella cool. I also have a basilisk, and normally field em both + 1 or two dreadnoughts.
Also you need to ask yourself a question. how good can you guess ranges? If you cant guess range very well, you can either do it through trial and error, or just get the defiler, dont forget, with ordinance you dont roll to hit, you just roll scatter.
You know what they say, if you dont like the weather in houston...go back to where you came from
